Wonderful site to the down and out parent..

Hello everyone. This is my first post and I have to say that yesterday I was at my witts end. When I get that way I know that there is always help some where if you just take the time to look. My Name is Tim and I have a 13yo son that has adhd.

This is the one that my mother wished upon me, "your gonna have one just like you and Iam going to live to see it." Need less to say I believe that I had ADD when I was younger, of course they didnt look at it that way when I was growing up. We were labeled as other things which I dont need to mention.

My son was diagnosed at the cleveland clinic when he was 10. I was a divorced single parent of two. Getting him the help that he needed from the schools was very hard and vvery long. They just gave me excuses for not doing anything, "hes a slow starter, hes just inmature, he dosnt want to learn."

I finally got feed up and took him to the specialist and now he gets alot of help in school. He was held back a year in second grade. Levi has been a pretty good kid most of the time and has been thru a lot for only being 13.

Of course there are the times that I just want to choke him... like yesterday. That is why I found this site. I knew in my heart that choking him was not the answer.

Levi has had bad grades most of his time in school. He also has a really bad habit of lying. I tryed washing his mouth out with soap for a while a few years ago every time I caught him in one. It got to the point he would say, "I know" and then he would do it him self. lost its effect.

So I put him in counseling for a year, that didnt help and to this day he still lies. You can walk in and catch him with his hand in the cookie jar and he would tell you straight faced that he wasnt getting a cookie, thats just how he is. (Not that I mind him getting a cookie, just easy to explain that way.) It almost compulsive I would say.

He has never really been a trouble maker. All his teachers praise him as far as being a "Cute, funny, well mannered, respectful little boy." well thats not gonna cut it when you have to go in to the real world.

he has been on several different types of medication and is currently on strattera and riddilin. It does help, when he dosnt "Forget" to take them.

Recently over the past year he has started stealing and of course lying about it. 2 weeks ago he took a xxx dvd from his grandparents house, which he was made to return and apologize. very emotional, tears and all.
This week he took some things from my bedroom to include a bullet. There are no guns in the house and I forgot that it was even there. We have been over this ground before about going thru my room and taking things with ouy asking. (stealing) Oh no dad I borrowed it, along with a whole box of condoms that I passed out at school during lunch" Borrowing hey?

My wife and Levis step mother has never dealt with anything like him before and vents often on me. we have been married a few years and she has no other children so this is a learning experiance for her. We also have a 2 yo little girl. When she was born the first thing Levi ask was if she ADD. Broke my heart.

I guess this is enough for now, we all have our stories to tell and we are all looking for some help in one way or another. I am very glad that I found this site. I must have spent 5 hours reading thru post and then finally I read one that made me smile. It was a guy telling about his 8yo daughter that always "forgot" even if she knew it she would pretent like she didnt.
she spend many hours at the table trying to remember how to do something, then he wheeled in her bike and started to take it apart, ten min. later her home work was done. What really made me smile was then he said they had gotten her a puppy, and the dog has add also. "ball???? whats a ball? It reminded me that just when you think it cant get any worse.... Ha!

I have lots of questions and only some answers. I will help If I can.

Most of all its good to know that Iam not alone, sometimes it really feels that way.

Tim

Welcome! You are not alone...I have a two boys and the older is severe ADHD/ODD and what you describe is what we live, too! They are the most funny, lovable, cute, clever (oh so clever) aggravating, irritating, loud, challenging children! Looking forward to hearing more from you!
