Re: Increased sex drive from ADHD, becoming a problem

I just wanted to add that this is a really cool thread. Many people assume that people with ADHD who are more excited about.... are that way due to the medication, many times though it's the ADHD itself that makes you think about it all day long.

Re: Increased sex drive from ADHD, becoming a problem

*sigh*

Whats sex got to do with ADHD at all?

Some people have massive sex drives, some people have no sex drives at all. And a persons sex drive can change at any moment. ADHD has nothing to do with it.

Every single thing mentioned on here seems to get linked to ADHD in some way, when it has nothing to do with it at all.

It does have to do with impulsive behaviour at least, if not more ADHD stuff also.

Prior to diagnosis, I would say you just described at least half of my relationships.

I see your point Fraser, I really do. However, hyperactivity or just ADHD in general(to me,anyway) effects almost everything a person with the condition does in life. It's nearly impossible for me to imagine one area not effected by it directly or indirectly.

Re: Increased sex drive from ADHD, becoming a problem

Hyperactivity -> more desire for sex
Impulsivity -> more likely to act on desires
"Hyperfocus" -> more-intense desire for sex
Self-medication for anxiety and depression -> guess...
Lack of social acceptance -> searching for the ultimate acceptance -> you got it...

Great outline. Breaks everything down so clearly. We should have a chart called: How ADHD makes you horny!

Besides all that, at the most basic level, sex equals survival. It's the only survival skill I have any proficiency at.

Thanks. I'm not sure that's everything though. I don't have The ADHD Encyclopedia in my head.

Re: Increased sex drive from ADHD, becoming a problem

I'm not a guy, nor hyperactive, but... I have a fairly low sex drive. It's possible I just haven't found the right partner yet. I really don't know what my sex drive is capable of since I'm 24 and never really had a partner I was attracted to enough to be completely into it. The only partner I completely, intensely enjoyed sex with is the one I had sex with the least. We had sex a total of one time. We dated a little after that, but she was unsure and didn't want to have sex again because she's commitment-phobic.

However. Despite the low sex drive, I get really distracted by sexual partners and sex, like anything else I enjoy... I don't know when to quit. The absolute worst part of it is when I have a crush on someone or I'm thoroughly attracted to someone, and then I just spend allllllllll day and alllllllllll night daydreaming about said person. UGHGHGHGHGH... what a freakin' waste of time. I hate that. It's truly OCD, but OCD caused by ADD. Sometimes I literally think about almost nothing for an entire day except a woman who's not even present and barely talks to me when not face-to-face. This makes letting go when they inevitably abandon me incredibly difficult....... then I obsess over them when they tell me they're no longer interested, or when we have problems... it goes from obsession mixed with pleasurable feelings to obsession mixed with horror and depression. I hate this process. It disgusts me. But I do it.

I'm really glad that I currently have a long distance, polyamorous, transgender boyfriend who I think is awesome... but who because he's a guy, I'm not able to obsess over him the way I do with most of the women I've been with. He's also my longest relationship so far (4 months) and is the only one who I've had a truly strong friendship connection with. Plus, he and my last partner both have other people as their primaries... and it's long distance. But when we're together, he's a little ADD, too, so we just spend 24/7 together... he won't even go to sleep, so I'll be exhausted half the time. I love it because it actually kinda gels with my personality, the 24/7 thing... I mean, since we're long distance, I wouldn't get anything done anyway at his place unless on my meds... but I'm also like, "Whoa. Is this normal?" It's as if my other lovers made me feel abnormal for wanting to spend so much time with them at once, but he makes it normal. It's not even questioned. It feels normal. It feels like a relationship should be. I come to spend the weekend with him and he doesn't neglect me. A previous lover, we hooked up and spend nearly 24 hours together that first time, and she commented that she "doesn't normally do this" as if she was uncomfortable spending so much time with me. Another lover called me "a time warp." I'm never the one to end things. Since I can't focus on what I'll be doing when we depart, or am not sure I'll be able to focus when we part ways, I get really indecisive and sad about going...

But sex itself? Haven't had it since nearly 3 months ago and only just beginning to miss it. However, if I were much more attracted to this guy, I'd probably be thinking about the sex a lot when we're apart. Thank God I'm not because I can't be dealing with more of that **** till I get my meds straight.

My sex drive hasn't changed since I was about 12. Or maybe it's increased a bit over the years. I suspect that there is a connection between that and my ADHD. And it seems, at the very least, that I'm not the only one.

You say ADHD has nothing to do with it, and that we're seeing causation where there is only correlation (and perhaps a weak correlation, at that).

Well, perhaps. So far, a number of folks have recounted their personal experiences, many of which have some strong similarities. Maybe we're just self-selecting and mutually reinforcing. It's certainly possible. But at least we've offered some evidence, if only anecdotal. Whereas you've just broadly and brashly dismissed everything said here, but on the basis of... nothing. Essentially, if you want to convince anyone that they're wrong/mistaken/etc, then you'll need to better than throwing around empty assertions. M'kay?

Re: Increased sex drive from ADHD, becoming a problem

Nonzens - I wonder how much of what you're describing is what people call "hyperfocus" related to ADHD, and not related to OCD. Or if those two are related to each other anyway and maybe it doesn't matter. "Normal" people who really are attracted to us, often love the extreme attention we give them when we're hyperfocused on them - and then they're sometimes devastated when our hyperfocus stops and we snap back to our usual selves.

I have a very low sex-drive. And now with my Cipralex (for GAD), it became virtually non-existent. I really envy you, guys

Yeah, it's pretty cool at first. Until you realize you cannot turn it off at the right times! When sexual fantasies about females or/& Porn is all you can think about, then it becomes a pretty big problem.
