Question Anxiety and Depression treated with Strattera, has this worked for you?

I've sufered a pretty sever breakdown through situational stress/feelings of inadequacy when starting a new high pressured job with a design agency. The situation liften the wool on how much I actually struggle with ADHD and Dyslexia and Social anxiety daily. I had to leave and have since been out of work trying to get ontop of my mental health.

It's been a downward spiral since then. I've been on Sertraline (SSRI) for 6 months, with Concerta added in after 3, this regiment lasted about 8 days with the Concerta heightening my anxiety and I was experiencing crushing depression when it wore off. So much so that I couldn't even think about moving my body. The Sertraline was causing severe cognitive blunting and memory problems, and in turn increasing anxiety/depression.

So I took it upon myself to request from my psychiatrist that I stop both medications and trial Strattera. I'm currently on day 4/5 of 30mg of strattera whilst tapering down slowly from Sertraline. At about 20mg of Sert atm.

For a few days at 20mg my anxiety and depression lifted, I had some clarity and a tonne more energy. The former two returned after stepping up a dose, and the fog/dizziness has rolled back in too. At 30mg I feel emotionally unstable, I'm experiencing an overwhelming feeling of dread and subtle suicidal ideation (but I've experienced this on Sertraline when climbing the doses and I'm keeping an eye on it.

MY QUESTION TO YOU

So from what I've read within this forum and other sources, it's going to be a while before I notice any significant improvements in the form of ADHD, but for those of you that experience positives for anxiety and mood. How long before those were noticeable/consistent? And at what dosages?

Should I be concerned that at such a low dose these negative side effects are taking over, or from your experience did these abate with time? I'm worried that they are going to worsen.

Did your anxiety worsen on this med before it became effective?

The depression brought on after Concerta wears off is horrific. It's more than depression. I'm glad you got off quickly. I stayed on it way too long. It's hard to tell if Straterra is helping with my mood since I'm on Wellbutrin too.

Some anti-depressants, seems more SSRI's, cause Suicidal Ideation in vulnerable people. Sometimes it passes as you stay on the med and your mood increases but if it doesn't, talk to your doc about a new med. There are a ton of them out there including SSNRI's which is a different class of anti-depressants.

Strattera reduced my anxiety a lot, only took a couple days for the anti anxiety effect I noticed, but it didn't do anything for concentration etc.

Re: Anxiety and Depression treated with Strattera, has this worked for you?

I was on Xanax for 18 years. I just dealt with my ADHD and was never medicated for it. However after I stopped smoking (1st time ever), my ADHD got worse, so much so that I couldn't get any work done.

Long story short, about 2 1/2 years ago I was put on Strattera and after the 1st month (on the starter pack - step up to 80mg), I was feeling less anxious and my ADHD was starting to come under control. After 2 months I decided to try to get off Xanax (have tried several times over the years).

After 3 months I was totally off the Xanax and my ADHD was better (still there but not great)

About 6 months in I failed to fulfill my Strattera and went 3 days cold-turkey without it. Holy Crap!!! I felt a crushing cloud surround my mind, to a point where it was difficult to have conversations and act like a normal human. I felt my brain capacity was reduced by about 50%, every difficult to explain.

While I didn't have anxiety about this experience, I was wondering what the heck this drug was doing to me. I felt that the 30% reduction of my ADHD wasn't worth the effects of skipping a couple of pills of this med. I spoke with the doctor and we tapered off of it over the next 2 months.

===TAKEAWAY===
It's been 2 1/2 years since then and I've taken about 6 xanaxs during that time and it was typically due to having 4 cups of coffee during the day. The linden method fixed my panic attacks, Strattera helped me to get off the xanax.

I feel there was a positive permanent change from Strattera with regards to my Xanax worries / addition. As for my ADHD I fixed it by smoking again. (50% of what I used to do).

I have since tried Ritalin XR and concerta - lowest does of both and couldn't deal, my body doesn't dig them.

==OTHER NOTES ABOUT STRATTERA==

Dreams
I had some of the most vivid dreams of my life (strange, good and nightmarish), the odd things is I never experience dread when it was a nightmare, it was always excitement and awe. I miss them.

Libido
I read that peoples libido drops when on Strattera. I think my went up a bit, I got random erections at night which prompted more interaction with spouse. I look at this as a good thing.

Weight
Lost a much needed 20lbs. I believe this was an effect of the fix to my ADHD issue, I didn't run to food to avoid work. I worked!!! I've since added it all back.

===THE FUTURE===
I've thought about going back to Strattera but a little concerned still. I still haven't explored other stimulant solutions so I will try that route 1st. Also need more sleep, exercise, etc. but of course I won't do that because that would make me a responsible adult doing rational things.
