are therapists allowed to prescribe meds?

I'm just curious what their job is other than talk, can they actually act as a prescriber like what a psychiatrist can do or not? Depends on their license?

Re: are therapists allowed to prescribe meds?

In the USA, only MDs/DOs (and some NPs) can prescribe medications for ADHD.

"Therapist" is a (mostly) generic term for anyone who provides therapy.

Social workers, psychologists, and psychiatrists who do therapy can all call themselves "therapists" -- and in some states, so can anyone else who feels like it!

But the reverse is not usually true -- in most states, licensure of some kind is required to call oneself a social worker, psychologist, or psychiatrist.

"Counselor" tends to be more variable -- in some states, you have to be professionally licensed to call yourself a counselor, while in others you don't.

Also, in the USA Physician Assistants can prescribe. It depends on each state regulations about what can be prescribed such as narcotics.

Re: are therapists allowed to prescribe meds?

Generally no ... But there are a few psychiatrists who do therapy and prescribe medication. Those folks are usually extremely expensive, and don't take insurance.

Re: are therapists allowed to prescribe meds?

So pretty much the more schooling they had to do the less work they have to do (aka "Psychiatrist").

So psychiatrists just try to figure out what diagnosis to give a patient to determine what drugs can be prescribed?

This has been my experience with psychiatrists.

For 1on1 talk therapy I've had to see a different person besides my psychiatrist.

Currently I have a nurse practitioner who helps me with my meds, and a counselor for talk and group therapy (she runs a group I'm in).

Nurse practitioner can prescribe controlled medications? Assuming you are on the amphetamines?

Yeah.
She has me on adderall.

I think she had to do extra schooling or training or something to be able to prescribe these meds.

Yes that's generally what they do. They're schooled in the art of medication and not too much in therapy.
