Article about women being mislabled as 'hysterics' and sexism in medicine

"Medicine Has A Sexism Problem, And It’s Making Sick Women Sicker" by Maya Dusenbery in Huffington Post

I've been saying this for years, Cant wait for Lunacie to chime in.

Re: Article about women being mislabled as 'hysterics' and sexism in medicine

I was delighted to see this addressed on the tv show Grey's Anatomy last month.

On the women surgeons, in fact the chief of surgery at her hospital, was on the
way to work when she began experiencing symptoms of a heart attack and told
her husband to drop her off at another hospital they were just passing.

After an EKG failed to show any abnormalities, the male doctor chalked it up to
female oversensitivity (hysteria), completely discounting her years of medical
school and doctoring. Frustrated she finally sends a text to one of her own
surgeons, knowing that even in an ambulance during the ride to her hopsital
she could have a serious heart attack and die.

She chats with the woman in the bed next to her while waiting, and when that
woman experiences her own crisis with no one answering calls for help, she
jumps in to save the other woman's life, thereby exerting her own heart and
putting herself in danger.

The other doctor from her own hospital arrives just as she steps away from the
patient she's been helping and collapses in full heart attack crisis herself. She
is quickly taken to surgery and survives (thankfully as this show has a habit of
killing of main characters).

Do I believe that a male doctor would totally discredit and invalidate a woman's
personal recounting of illness or pain, even if that woman is also a doctor?
Hell, yes I do.

B.C. Women's Hospital & Health Centre, an agency of the Provincial Health Services Authority (PHSA), is a Canadian hospital located in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, specializing in women's health programs. It is the only facility in Western Canada dedicated to the health of women, newborns and families, and is the largest maternity hospital in the country. It is a teaching hospital and major provincial health care resource, and is a key component in women's health research.

I agree, we need more women’s hospitals/research

I would also like to see more men’s hospitals/research.

It would also be good to have hospitals/research for LBGT communities as well.

I would like to see everyone have the option they prefer, to address any individual biological differences.

It is a really interesting topic.

It's not new. There were also times in the 1800s that women were blamed of suffering from hysteria and going insane instead of diagnosing the proper symptoms.

Re: Article about women being mislabled as 'hysterics' and sexism in medicine

Its not new but it shouldnt be an issue anymore. As a woman with chronic pain related to very real conditions I cant tell you the amount of sniffs and dismissals I have gotten from male doctors. Right now I am wearing an expensive handbrace:

Because I need joint replacement surgery. My doctor says Im so young to have it he might want to hold off. Meanwhile Im in pain and he thinks its no big deal, even though I get cortisone shots and stuff.
My age and my gender and the fact that I dont work I "just" stay at home with kids all play into it.

Can women ask to go to women doctors?

This isn't about "preferred options."

It's about how women's health concerns are invalidated and dismissed as not
serious or based on emotions.

It's about how research has been done on men and boys and when women
present with symptoms that are different they are dismissed entirely.

It's about needing for this to change. In 1983 I needed to have my gall bladder
removed. The doctor called my husband to come and sit with me while he told
us so that he wouldn't have to face my emotions himself. This was a doctor who
had known me for 10 years and called me "John Wayne" because I laughed off
most pain.

So now, 25 years later, we still see the same dismissive attitude. If Sarah was
a man with a family to support, would the doctors want to take a "wait and see"
attitude, or would they get his hands fixed so that he could continue to support
himself and his family? Truth is, a woman with a husband, 3 kids, and a house
probably works just as hard as a man and works longer hours.

Ah, yes, the "you're too young" concern. I figured I'd get that attitude from the
doctor at my clinic, which is why I wanted to see the PA. Sure enough, since
she isn't there every day, the doctor had his nurse call me and let me know his
recommendation was an epidural. No invitation to come in and discuss the
options, just his opinion without talking to me AT ALL.

The nurse seemed surprised when I insisted that I would wait for the PA to
call me back and actually discuss it with me like an adult ... like a "man"?
Bless her heart, she set me up to see a specialist at the spine hospital.

Of course it's another man and I'm prepared for the same male superiority
to inform me of what he wants to do for me instead of seeking my input, in
which case I will simply walk out and reject their bill and ask the PA to find
me a different specialist.

The women’s hospital I posted about does women’s health research, it is the only women’s research hospital in western Canada, and I think we need more women’s hospitals like this model, to conduct more women’s specific research.

Edit: I would like to see women have the option to go to this type of women’s hospital, if they prefered.

Why do you say that only women should be doing this research? Why can't all
doctors and researchers take an interest in women's health?

Where did I say “that only women should be doing this researcher”?

I think all doctors and researchers should take an interest in woman’s health.

A women’s research hospital helps organize and promote that goal.

Thank you for clearing this up. Something about your wording made me think
you were saying that only women doctors should treat women patients.

This isnt about going to women's hospitals or having more hospitals by women for women. Women can be just as discriminatory towards other women if they lack the knowledge about a subject and are trying to keep their ego inflated .

See, that's how mild's post read to me as well, but that's not what he was
actually trying to say.

He said that there is only one hospital he knows of doing research on women's
issues. Which is good.

But what about the issues that we all have, like adhd and heart attacks which
can present or look different in women than in men? If doctors are taught to
look for the symptoms commonly seen in boys or men, they will certainly miss
some very important symptoms that women present with.
