wais 4 score are they useful?

i've always seemed look at complex things in my brain and interact with them. i can look at any system or mechanism that isn't already nearly perfect and find flaws or inefficiencies and solutions for them.

i'm 36 and recently went for a neuropsych test for add. the doctor thinks my lower scores can't be trusted because of personality.

on the wais 4 i scored 99th %ile on process speed index, working memory index and digit span.

are processing speed and working memory same kind of meaning as in computers?

and are these score useless without college degree or are there think tanks that hirer non grads also and work on many different things?

thank You for You're time

Re: wais 4 score are they useful?

These tests are only useful in testing for ADHD when they are used as a part of a total diagnosis history. I was given IQ testing as part of my ADHD test, but I also had to submit report cards, high school and university grades, job history, samples of my written work both typed and hand written, several screening tests, and a lengthy interview covering pretty much every aspect of my life.

As it was explained to me, IQ testing was used to show whether you are working to your potential. If you have a high IQ yet suffer in class, this can be one indication of an underlying issue. If you do exceptionally well on one portion of the test, but very poor on another, it could show certain deficiencies.

Process speed is how fast you are able to process visual information, and put it into motor action (seeing a problem, solving it mentally, then writing the answer).
Working memory is how well you can retain and manipulate date, this portion is associated with attention and concentration.
Digit span is one component of working memory.

There are no tests foe adhd but they can be helpful in ruling out other disorders.

Re: wais 4 score are they useful?

The WAIS scores are used in addition to the standard ADHD assesment. As Sarah says, there is no "test" for ADHD, but the WAIS can be used in addition to a psychiatric evaluation to diagnosis ADHD.

Often, the WAIS will clearly support the diagnosis. There are always exceptions though, and sometimes the WAIS scores won't support an ADHD diagnosis. That does not mean that you don't have ADHD, it just means that proper diagnosis will be more difficult.

IQ and WAIS scores are meaningless outside of diagnostic testing. A degree and job experience are the only things that will get you hired anywhere, no one is clamoring to hire underemployed geniuses who aren't living up to their potential.

wais are brilliant..they give you a realt idea of strengths and weaknesses can pick up other conditions and also the psychologist can often suggest ways of working around any problems he picks up during the testing...for example...i was told because of my extremely low processing speed never to take note by hand and to use a dictaphone so my focus and working memory werent over stretched in lectures etc.. invaluable tool

I agree. I knew I was a spatial mastermind, but now I have proof!

I also knew I was a slow reader, but never realized how slow. I now know that I have a lot to overcome in that area. Knowing what your strengths and weaknesses helps you prioritize the skills you need to develop, and recognize the skills you can capitalize on.

I did awfully on "coding" Apparently I'm a horrible perfectionist, I tried to draw every "letter" perfectly, and finished less than half of them. Not helpful for note taking either.

Re: wais 4 score are they useful?

I'm actually learning how to administer cognitive tests such as the WAIS-IV. Processing speed and working memory tend to be low in people with ADHD compared with their other scores, but not in everyone with ADHD! The WAIS is NOT a diagnostic tool. It can't tell you anything besides that you do well on those specific tasks (for example, the working memory tasks really only test your auditory short-term memory, not visual or kinesthetic or long-term memory), and a lot of other things can affect your score besides just your memory/speed of processing information.

Your scores on the WAIS aren't like SAT scores - you don't share them with people or write them on your resume. They're just for you to have as information about what type of things you might be good at and what kinds of things challenge you. The neuropsychologist should be able to give you a full written interpretation of your scores once he or she has finished all of your testing, but it's not that useful without other more specific tests.
