what a trip!

http://www.youtube.com/watch_popup?v=NINOxRxze9k

This is a ride thru San Francisco, filmed on a cable car, in the 1900's

....it's really worth watching.....it's like a ghost ride.

Re: what a trip!

so entrancing, so hypnotic. so impossible.

I loved it.

I am watching it again. What a great use of the new medium!

I've wanted to do something very like this in New York. I think you may have inspired me.

"No San Franciscans were harmed during the making of this film."

Re: what a trip!

IT'S AMAZING ....they have no cross walks, or street lights....

.............everyone is going a different direction, on a different vehicle....cars, carriages, horses,

cable cars....and most look back at you....in a ghostly "see you soon" sorta way...

.............the proof......sometimes... there is order in chaos.

Hmmm . . . . I see a smiling kid hawking newspapers, lots of businessmen, street vendors, people in automobiles, horses, teenagers running around, a lady with a GREAT hat boarding a cable car -- all very much alive in that moment and magically presented to us across the great divides of time and space, of life and death.

They don't know about the earthquake, or the 2 World Wars or nuclear anything. They don''t even know about Pluto! or air travel or cellphones or the Internet. They don't know.

Just as we don't know.

LOVE IT!!!

Re: what a trip!

I found that very interesting!

When I moved to northern Nevada I started getting interested in the old mining towns that once flourished throughout the state. I walked through the dust and rubble of all that was left of that boomtime, when people looked like that video.

I've love reading journals from people that lived back then, people as hard as the land they walked across. They had no cell phones,no ice cold refreshments...heck,I don't know if they even had toilet paper!

Thanks for putting that up.

Sure flies with me -- I find it totally mesmerizing. I don't want to change the channel!

Re: what a trip!

It's interesting how slowly everything is moving, isn't it? Yet people probably felt harried and overwhelmed, just as they do today.

Who was it, Plato (?) who decried writing because it would weaken the mind's ability to memorize? Imagine what he would think of the internet, eh?

Re: what a trip!

A little known fact or rumor In the 1906 many houses sustained damage, insurance companies would not insure earthquake damage but they would fire damage, many fires were started intentionally

Re: what a trip!

One sensory component is missing from that trip to 1906 -- the smell. Specifically the fragrance from horse droppings...
