Re: My possible ADD

Well, I kept fairly good tabs on my experience with the strattera to hopefully be able to explain it to the doctor in an understandable way, at my appointment tomorrow.

So far, the main side effects I have trouble with are the daytime tiredness and feeling like the "inattentive" symptoms of my ADD are somewhat elevated since I started taking it, maybe due to the tiredness that it is causing.
Other than that, I can't really tell any difference, however whether it's the buspar or strattera working, I am much calmer and feel somewhat peaceful for once in my life so I do like that part. I just need to be able to be awake and atleast somewhat alert during the day. It's been a long sleepy month and hopefully me and the doctor can get the correct dosage or even correct med combination figured out.

Re: My possible ADD

The doctor wasn't in today so I rescheduled for next week. I will run out of the strattera in a couple days, maybe in the time that I stop taking it maybe I'll be able to tell a difference and see if it was in fact the strattera causing the extra tiredness on top of the buspar.

Re: My possible ADD

Just a quick update. I ran out of strattera on Saturday. Sunday I felt the normal tiredness that I've felt since I started taking the strattera. Monday I woke up feeling more awake and the same today, but I do notice the mild calmness is also mostly gone too. So I do believe it may be the strattera making me very tired during the day. On the other hand, I do believe it was helping somewhat.

I believe my ADD to be primarily inattentive but with fairly mild hyperactivity. I think it was helping with the hyperactivity but not so much with the inattentiveness, probably because it makes me so tired. Surprisingly even at that low of a dose.

If they put me back on it and it does the same thing then I'll know for sure.

Re: My possible ADD

Ok, had my doctor appointment today.

We decided to try upping strattera dose a little, taper off the buspar and add citalopram for the anxiety to try instead of the buspar to see if it helps keep me from being so tired during the day.

The doctor also mentioned the reason for not trying other ADHD meds for now is that my resting heart rate is fairly high. She said that could be partially due to the fact that I drink alot of coffee. So this month (until my next appointment) I'm going to try to limit my caffeine intake and do my best to exercise more to see if that helps the heart rate situation. I'm not overweight by any means but lately I've been alot less physically active partially due to the tiredness from the meds and low ambition to do anything.

Re: My possible ADD

Well so far my energy levels have been much closer to (my) normal, even after upping the dose of strattera so that may have not been the issue after all. In fact I am noticing a bit of better focus as well over all. I almost have to remind my self to blink my eyes. So I'm hopeful that maybe some of the other effects will improve as well in time. I consider that a good start, if it lasts

Re: My possible ADD

Just a little update. I recently upped my doses on both the citalopram (generic celexa) and the strattera (the generic as well, forgot how to spell it)and am noticing further improvements.

Treating the anxiety makes the adhd somewhat more manageable and treating the ADHD makes the anxiety more manageable. I have noticed the biggest improvement with the anxiety, though I still get my usual mild social anxiety attacks, I'm much less anxious during the day which is helps me be a little less distracted.
As far as the ADHD itself goes, it's no night and day difference yet, but I am doing a bit better at work and slightly less all over the place in my head. I still am constantly thinking while doing somewhat boring tasks but can better pull my self back to what I'm doing. I also feel less overwhelmed all the time and also am getting to sleep better which helps a ton.

Also, I am still my self (from my perspective anyway) which is extremely important to me. Just a less stressed out, less overwhelmed and somewhat less anxious version of me.

I have been able to cut back on my caffeine consumption as well. I can get by with one cup of coffee in the morning but 2 cups is better and one at lunch time is still beneficial.

Re: My possible ADD

How long have you been on Strattera now? It took me 6 weeks to notice any positive results. But the results were not enough so I was prescribed stimulants. Have you ever thought of taking a stimulant?? Help me tremendously

I've been on the strattera for almost 3 months. I've not taken any stimulant meds yet, my doctor is concerned with my high heart rate during my visits (which is anxiety related) and wants to make sure I get that taken care of before trying something else.

Has Strattera helped you at all?

Re: My possible ADD

It does seem like the strattera has helped a little, not a huge difference by any means but I think it has. I feel like I do focus a little better at times where I normally would have more trouble. I'm still on a prety low dose though(25mg I think). I may see about upping the dose again at my next Dr visit.

What possitive effects did you get from the strattera?

Re: My possible ADD

I am on 40mg and after 6 weeks I could tell a difference in my energy level, clear head, better in conversations and I could read better. Now that I mixed in stimulants everything is better and I can read like a mother f@#*er

Those are similar to what I notice with strattera also, it's fairly subtle so far but does seem to help a bit.
One other thing, when I'm driving somewhere I notice my eyes are more glued to the road and it's almost like I have to remind myself to blink. So I think it helps me with paying attention somewhat. I've never had a problem driving as far as being dangerous like I've seen mentioned that ADHD people are more likely to get in a wreck, but I have had a problem paying attention to signs when I'm going somewhere new and can pass up my turn off or go past the place I'm looking for. The strattera seems to be helping in that respect and I'm more at ease driving.

Re: My possible ADD

Just an update. At my last Dr appointment I adjusted my strattera to 40mg and decided to stay at 20mg on the citalopram for now as it seems to be working fairly well on the anxiety end. So far, so good. There are subtle yet noticable improvements and I'm still myself, and so far no major side effects.

On a side note, with this combo I'm finding it very beneficial to heavily moderate my caffeine intake. I do best with a cup of coffee early in the morning (or max 2 cups in the morning) and then sometimes a cup at lunch time. Any more than that doesn't seem to help and can start making me a bit jittery.
