What can you do in 2-3 days to help someone with anxiety?

On a visit with my parents. My mom is visibly depressed and even told me that she's started having anxiety again. I'm here for just a few days but if possible I'd like to do something to help her. She's just stopped taking her anti deoressants, which is probably the reason for this.

I doubt I can convince her to start them again. she denies having depression and anxiety ajd never calls them as such. Her code words are "laziness" for depression and "restlessness" for anxiety. I know what they really are but she truly believes that she is really just being extremely lazy for some reason and that she's feeling unpleasantly restless.

When you visit her, don't even mention depression or anxiety. But perhaps suggest a relaxing activity you can both do together such as meditation or yoga. Tell her that you've taken one of them up recently and wouldn't mind her joining you in one of the exercises. It may help both of you to relax a little.

Are you near any mountains or a forest or any other really pretty places of nature?

Perhaps take her on a long leisurely car drive? Try to stop and get out and go for a small walk to sit at a picnic table if they have them at some point along the way. You can even pack lunch/diner.

I don't know. I went for a drive up into the mountains yesterday for the first time this summer...and I swear, at least for me...being in nature does something to your brain. The sun and the clean air and the sounds...it just made me feel good...deeply.

It wont be a long term fix...hell it might not do a damned thing at all...but who knows? Maybe it'll be just enough to get her going again?

Just a long winded idea lol

Re: What can you do in 2-3 days to help someone with anxiety?

What brilliant ideas. I love you guys.

I asked my mom to show me this beautiful park in my city and she actually agreed.

Psycho I feel the same in nature. It's so soothing. Hubby and me do a lot of hiking. Sometimes we get into really really bada arguments before a planned hike and I then always want to cancel because without just want to stay at home and cry and sleep but usually hubby convinces me to go anyway and somehow once we are out somehwere beautiful all the hostility and hurt just vanishes and sometimes we actually manage to resolve our issues then. It's amazing what being in beautiful surroundings can do.

My mom is a bit of a hard nut as she doesn't want to do anything when she's depressed but thankfully she's agreed to the park. She has hurt her back so she can't do a lot of things she used to do like regularly walks or exercise and I think that is affecting her mood as well.

I love Fraser's idea as well. My mom used to be big time into philosophy and in my city here there are lots of sort of meditation and learning centres, many in pretty and soothing surroundings. The depression has killed off all that interest though. Chronically.

I will look up if there is anything close to my house though. Something like yoga would be perfect but she's limited now because of her injury.

Mindfulness or meditation would be great but when I suggested it she refused. Said she just can't meditate at all.

Maybe we can just do something like get a facial. A back massage would be brilliant but I don't think she can because of her back injury. Maybe a face massage. I could tell her that I want to get a facial before going back and ask her to join me.
