Post Anyone got ADHD, OCD and/or Anxiety need advice here!

Hi

Only read this when you have the time to, its pretty long.

I was diagnosed with ADHD since I was 8 years old (2003). Now that I am age 18, I am suspicious that I have a co-morbidity to ADHD. Personally I feel that I have always had Purely Obsessional OCD that was never picked up - this would be down to the fact that this OCD that I think I have was only obvious to me when I took stimulants recently...

After I was diagnosed I was put on methylphenidate which I put up with for YEARS! (2003-2012) This stimulant drug would allow me to focus and stay awake, it gave me a great amount of stamina, however instead of focusing on school work or what I should be doing - my mind always seemed to drift off to wander - I would be sitting in class listening to the teacher and then my mind would wander off elsewhere and I would be thinking about things in my life, but also things that are not going on in my life... - I would think and imagine things that are not going on in my life and things that are not neccessarily real. I would also think about people or person in my head and obsess about them in my head - its terrible!! It made my shoulders tense up etc. Im not even sure that what I have described gives an accurate picture of what is going on.

In august 2012 I was put onto Strattera daily, which over time made me sleepy and drowsy each day - I was coming home from school and going asleep for up to two hours. It was like I was sedated all the time. I had no other choice at the time as I had been through all the medicated options the doctor had offered me and what was available in the UK.

I really liked the stimulants because they kept me awake all day long and gave me great work stamina, But I never seemed to be able to settle down to do anything .... and when I did, my brain just went off on a wander of its own.

This year (2013) I was trialled on Vyvanse for two weeks when I started university (Elvanse in the UK) and this made me very wide awake (like other stimulants I have been on in my life), but did the same things as the methylphenidate did - but seemingly worse. My mind was wandering off and I focused on these anxieties that I mentioned before, except it was a lot harder to stop thinking about them - I think this was down to hyperfocus, It was like I was trapped in my own brain. It was almost like I was hallucinating as well as I did not have a clue what was going on in my immediate surroundings as I was so focused on where I was going etc. It was terrible!. It also gave me really bad backpain and muscle tension.

To this day after all of these events over the years I have to question my diagnosis.

Was it that the whole time I had an unknown case of OCD (and still do) thus the stimulant medications that I was put on exacerbated the Pure OCD, thus my diagnosis should be ADHD & OCD?

OR....

Could it be that I have ADHD & Anxiety?

Or....

Could it be that I have a sleeping disorder such as narclopsy, sleep apnea or Delayed sleep-phase disorder? Because (without stimulants in my day) I have excessive daytime tiredness and I always seem to 'come alive' at night time and stimulant medication ALWAYS solved that for me.

I just don't know what to do because I had to come off the Vyvanse but now I get the daytime tiredness I have always experienced in my life and I have no drive or importance for things.

DOES ANYONE KNOW WHAT MIGHT BE GOING ON HERE?
DOES IT SOUND LIKE OCD OR WHAT?

Thank you all in advance!

Andy

My ADHD sometimes looked like innatentive type, but I feel that this was because of the untreated anxiety.

For anxiety and adhd, I take lexapro and adderall. I heard that Wellbutrin is a good med for the combo. Also, intuniv works great on top of a stimulant for extra focus. So, maybe you could lower stimulant and add intuniv e plus lexapro.

Im afraid Wellbutrin is not available for ADHD in the UK.

Neither is Intuniv. In fact, Intuniv is under clinical trial for UK release which isnt due to end until November 2015 I will be nearly finishing my degree by then!!! (Thats if I get that far! Im currently a fresher)

I take Strattera 50mg at night at present.
This keeps my working memory in shape but thats it!! It doenst give me the drive and focus that methylphenidate gave me.... Unfortunately I had to come off that due to the fact that It made me paranoid and anxious... it also made me very lonely.... This is why I think I could have OCD, becuase the stimulant medication that I was given for my ADHD was causing bad reaction.

I don't know what to do I had work that I had to do tonight which had to be submitted tonight but I couldnt EVEN FINISH ALL OF IT!! Thats how bad things are.... I cant settle and do work.... without the strattera I would be a lot worse but I really want stimulants again.. but I cant becuase of the side effects...

WHAT AM I TO DO? ANY OPTIONS ANYONE CAN SUGGEST?

I am going to see my GP on Friday

I'm sorry! I would make a schedule and do all of the behavioral adjustment treatments. I'm sure you can do it!! Why not Adderall again? I'd go see a specialist. Are you sure about the OCD? What makes you think you definitely have it?

You see, I think an awful lot. I get paranoid about my friends and I get emotionally attached to people. I would always think certain things that I dont want to think and for some of those things I would then compulse as a way of relief from thinking about those things. I would mention what these things are but its very confidential im afraid. But we could say that those things are intimate romantic things....

Re: Anyone got ADHD, OCD and/or Anxiety need advice here!

Well, if the psych is to be trusted, I do have OCD+ADHD, or at least some form of it (mild pure-O perhaps). I just started ritalin and, on bad days, it does the same to me.. trapped in an endless cycle of worrying, fears, sudden deep depressive feelings, crying spells (I almost never cry), feeling like the world is a very scary place. Up the dose and you get someone who sees a car and his first thought is: I might get run over. Not fun, at all. The worst part is that it really, really seems to depend on my mood, but telling me that I *need* to be in a good mood for something is a sure-fire way to ensure that I won't be in a good mood.

The psychiatrist who did the diagnostics suggested perhaps taking wellbutrin together with Ritalin. However, he also added to just try the ritalin first, as it might just work. Other anti depressants should work as well, provided they don' collide with Ritalin.

In the UK, buproprion (i.e. Wellbutrin's active ingredient) is available as Zyban, for smoking cessation (low dose only). Perhaps your GP can work something out?
