Do you have poor impulse control when stressed?

Hi all! I have Asperger's Syndrome as well as ADD and find that at times when I become stressed I have very bad impulse control and don't always have a good idea of what is "dangerous" or not. Sometimes it takes me a few seconds to realize that something is dangerous and therefore not okay.

For example, one time I was very stressed out after my mother dropped me off at my bus stop. I realized I forgot a very important paper in her car and became so stressed and so focused on the paper (by this time I was also crying) that, without thinking, I ran out into the road, with other cars driving around, and tried to chase my mother's car down. It didn't occur to me that I could get hit. Actually, I didn't even notice the other cars that were driving past me.

I also have social anxiety. Although I don't mind kids I am not a good baby sitter for several reasons, one of them being that I have a delayed "danger" reaction. I am not sure if it is maybe social anxiety that is distracting me, but it takes me a few seconds to realize that I probably shouldn't be letting that 6 year old play with the stove, or I shouldn't let that toddler chew on that pen. It's not that I am stupid, but it just takes me longer to figure things like that out.

Although things like the former are rare events for me, things like the latter happen every time I am left alone to baby sit a child. It's not even just dangerous things. Sometimes it's things that are inappropriate, like letting a child repeatedly go to the sink, fill a glove full of water, bring it to bed, dump the water, and then repeat the process.

I can't explain why this happens, but it occured to me that maybe it is related to ADD or AS? Has anybody else experience anything like this?

The judgement problems with your babysitting seem AS related and ADD could cause a lapse in judgement. Altho I don't have these problems (except when I get angry and my actions aren't pre thought out), it sounds related.

Welcome to the forum and hopes that helps.

First one sounds like a meltdown. You're under a lot of stress so aren't thinking clearly. I have beaten my fists against walls, kicked and screamed and just made quick highly emotive decisions.

The poor danger response could be that you're in a situation that has changed and appears more chaotic than what you are used to, so a few things slip your mind. It could be either AS or ADHD related.

I don't think I could babysit kids. I don't think I could be trusted with them.

Sometimes I look back on things and see that I had a lapse in judgement. I think these things you're describing sound like they are treatable once you figure out why you do them. Do you see a specialist and are you receiving treatment? I would ask someone that could help you with coping techniques.

Yeah, I am sure it's just due to stress, but it is still very annoying and I don't trust myself to care for a child.
