Yes, three lines. 5-7-5. And traditional Haiku usually has an overt and/or veiled references to nature or weather... but modern "westernized" haiku don't have to.

I am actually teaching poetry once a week at the school. The children just learned about Haiku. They are finishing them up later this morning. All will be laminated and placed on the wall in the hall for writers night. They have written several different forms of poetry for this and are very excited about Thursday night.

Post your Haiku here!
Hi all,
I thought I would put up a thread for posting your own Haiku. For those of you unfamiliar with Haiku, here is a link to a great page on how to write them, and the rules for creating a "traditional" Haiku. Because we're ADD people, though, I see no reason why we should stick to any crazy *rules*, though! (However, you should try to stick to the three lines, 5-7-5 approach... three lines of poetry (they don't have to rhyme, and in fact usually do not, of 5 syllables, then 7 syllables, then 5 syllables.) Anyway, let's see if we can keep this thread going with each post being a separate Haiku. So there's my only request for this thread.... you can comment all you want, but each post needs to have one of your Haikus in it (or a famous one, if you study the old masters). Sound good? I'll begin with a couple. Here's my first effort: The whisper of rain Falling through the lush oak leaves Lulls me now to sleep.

Here's another one I wrote:
Snow on my windshield, Wipers clacking noisily; The forecasters lied.

And a third one of mine:
Cold autumn morning, Frost glistening on the grass Forebodes December.

And one of my newer ones:
And a third one of mine: The seed takes refuge From the ravenous blackbird In newly-mown grass.

And just to prove you can write one "on the fly", here's one I cobbled together just now, watching what's going on outside my window on this sultry spring morning...
Delicate pink flakes Apple scent fills my senses A rain of blossoms Join me! Post your Haiku here, or post your favorites... or those of your children, students, or whatever! It's FUN!

For those interested in traditional Haiku, here are a couple to get your creative juices flowing.
The first two are from the Poet Basho (how many of you remember the classic line from Caddyshack... "a flute without holes is not a flute, and a donut with no hole is a danish."?) Basho is one of the most well-known of the Japanese poets, and lived and wrote his poems in the late 1600's. An old pond! A frog jumps in- The sound of water. Temple bells die out. The fragrant blossoms remain. A perfect evening! And on a more irreverent note, here's one from the "Spam Haiku" site... yes, a site that is devoted to Haiku about Spam!!! Greasy by-product of a sow's final moment Now clogs up your heart ![]()

The term eludes me ... The Web site you seek cannot be located but endless others exist Yesterday it worked Today it is not working Windows is like that Three things are certain: Death, taxes, and lost data. Guess which has occurred. ![]()
