Unhappy Ritalin Stopped working...

I was diagnosed as having ADD at the age of 17. The damage was done because I felt like an idiot all my life. After I started taking Ritalin my grades went significantly up because it took care of my main problem: procrastination. I finally started feeling like an equal to others.

Since then I used Ritalin regularly only with a less than a year break when I went working before the university. The university pretty much closed the process that started years ago: little by little I felt like itís becoming harder and harder for me to study. Until in the middle of the second semester I suddenly realized that Iím struggling with doing my chores as if I wasnít on Ritalin. And I think itís important to mention that in the first semester I failed half of my courses.

Since Ritalin stopped doing its job for me and since it had some major side effects I decided to completely stop taking it. And instead I tried some homeopathic treatment which I started when I repeated my first year in university.

Unfortunately the treatment didnít work for me at all and I was forced to drop out of university completely.

Instead I sighed up to a place where you can get a degree by taking as much courses as you want and instead of lectures you study at home. I have no idea if a university like this exists in USA or how itís calledÖ

I took one course (in a completely different direction of what I studied before) and I canít even keep up with this! This is so frustrating! Iím starting to feel like an idiot again though I know itís the ADD. The procrastination is killing me. I donít work, donít do anything but still I canít force myself to sit down and study. And when I do sit down I canít concentrate at all. I feel like a failure who has no future.

Anyone has some advice? Maybe some treatment that worked for them?

Also, did anyone try tai chi or yoga or something like this? Did it have any effect on the ADD symptoms?

Sorry for the long long story. Itís just something that piled up inside of me for months.

Re: Ritalin Stopped working...

I went through something similar. For me it turned out to be two separate but related situations. I thought my medicine wasn't working, went to an ADHD specialist who listened to everything and said "That's not the ADHD, that's anxiety." He was right. I was in a very bad situation at home and when I got out of it (by moving away) the meds worked just like they had always done.

The other part was that because of this bad home situation I had developed habits that made my procrastination EPIC. With practice and keeping a journal I was able to break down my behavior into what was ADD and I had to work around, and what wasn't ADHD, I needed to fix.

For example: meds or no, I can't study at a desk, even as a child (my ADHD). So I got rid of my desk and study on the couch, the floor, a friend's house, etc. If it doesn't work in one place, i move to the next. But getting started is really really hard and I often get anxious. I got into the habit of watching TV to hide from anxiety during my bad situation, so now I make my fiance hid all the remotes so I learn to work through my anxiety instead of avoiding it. It's a struggle but it's working.

I hope some of that helps you, sorry it's so long

Re: Ritalin Stopped working...

Thank you for your reply

In my case I know itís not anxiety because it developed over years and the only thing that made my life bitter is my inability to study. Although, I did break my head over if the procrastination could be psychological. I could never think of a reason and telling myself ďitís psychological so I can work around it if I really tryĒ didnít give me any results. So at a certain point I stopped believing it has something to do with my mentality.

And I really donít want to start taking Ritalin again because of the side effects and because of recent researches that made me believe that itís not the magical medicine I thought it is. But itís all going in that direction so I think that after a year of not touching it I will be forced to try it again. Probably not gonna do me any good anyway.

Re: Ritalin Stopped working...

I'm sorry to hear that you think nothing will work. No ADHD med is a magical medicine. As my doc says: "Pills do not equal skills." Luckily skills can be learned without pills.

Go with whatever works. Another doc said "If you can only study at 1AM with your back against a running dishwasher then study at 1AM with your back against a running dishwasher." If something doesn't work, don't try harder to make it work. Throw it away and try something else. If there have been times that something work, try recreating it. With ADHD, nothing works every time. But trying "harder" almost never works at all. The ADHD brain actually slows down when you push it harder.

It took me 7 years to find mine: on a couch with my stuff all over the floor after 11PM only. Ask me to sit at a desk in the middle of the day and I don't care how much medication you give me, I'll still just stare at the wall.

Other things that do help:
Exercise ( something that gets the heart pumping)
Walking away and doing something completely unrelated but that won't suck you in like tv or internet
Calling someone
Having someone sit with you while you are trying to something
Thinking about something involved with studying that you like (For me I think about the feel of my hands typing and that makes me want to feel it in real life)

This is what Iíve been doing. The result of this is that the only thing Iím throwing away is my life.

All the things the doctors told you I tried during my life in one way or the other. Nothing worked for me. Maybe I could study best after 10 pm but I was still failing at school and couldnít get 60 without cheating. Trust me, I really tried all those techniques. I had many many years to try them.

Re: Ritalin Stopped working...

I was having sort of a similar situation with my medication. Only that I was switched to a generic of the one I was using which worked from 9-3pm and stops working and didn't know what was going on. Gone back to the original med. which is working perfectly.
If you are finding that it affects other parts of your life and not just school you are better off speaking to your Dr. and changing it.

Re: Ritalin Stopped working...

I donít know what medication they give in your country for ADD but in my country they only have Ritalin. Ritalin for 4 hours, 8 hours and 12 hours (the last one costs a LOT). They have different names but theyíre all Ritalin. Exactly the same substance, just different doze.

At first I didnít even connect the bad feeling to the drug because it was past the time it should have an effect on me. Only after I stopped taking it I came across some resent researches which indicated that Ritalin stays in the body way past its working time. And stays for years in the brain cells (or something like this).

Although I DID go to a doctor when I felt it has no effect on me. She was absolutely of no help. She told me directly that there is nothing she can do.
