Strattera and Adderall

Hello I am new to this and this is my first post and thank you all for the posts I got to read. It was my birthday yesterday and I lost my job last Wednesday after they only gave me 3 weeks and said financially they can't afford me because new grads are cheaper and learn faster. Sound familiar?

I am going to try a trial dose of 2.5 mg. Adderall XR tommorrow morning, my new Psychiatrist starting me off at the lowest dosage because the focalin was too strong. I have been on Strattera 40 mg. for 6 months and it works for me very well but my new Psychiatrist says it doesn't work for anyone and it is a terrible med but I told him I couldn't function at all for more than 1 year until I took Strattera. To tell you the truth I think he needs medication.

I tried many antidepressants before Strattera which I got put on kinda by accident because my previous Psych didn't know about Adult ADD and put me on Strattera for depression since Ritalin worked but eventually only worked for 30 minutes so he said the FDA hasn't approved of Strattera for depression but he wanted to try it since ritalin worked but didn't last on me. So I decided to search on the computer to see what Strattera is for and what do you know I finally figured out what I have is ADD.

So this new Psych Dr. tells me Strattera doesn't work because he's tested it many times and I keep telling him it works for me. So is there anyone out there that is on Strattera and it works for you please let me know. In the meantime I'm trying the Adderall tommorrow just to see what happens. So any info on any of this I would appreciate. Thank you, peace

Re: Strattera and Adderall

Strattera is a horrible medication for many, many people.

But for the few that it does work for, it's life changing.

If you're ADD, avoid SSRI's without add meds. They'll make you worse in almost all situations.

It sounds to me like you need a different psych. Any Psych who says that an ADD drug doesn't work is nuts. ADD meds all work differently, and affect different amounts of dopamine/norepenephrine, at different parts of the pre frontal cortex. The recent development of a dopamine radio-tag paired with an FMRI has confirmed this. ADD is such a poorly understood disorder that's being learned in such a rapid rate, many psychs have become stuck to working within a very small box. Take the time to find one who actually cares about staying current with the latest research, because new, groundbreaking information is coming out every few months.

If you have to stick with that shrink, have him give my psychiatrist a call. Dr sterling will set his *** straight about how ADD really works in short order.

In short, yes, strattera is a godsend for a few people. It may not be many, but they exist.

Re: Strattera and Adderall

Why would your doctor rx a med they don't believe works?

If I read it right, he got it from a previous doc and has a new one that won't prescribe it.

Re: Strattera and Adderall

Hello it is me crystalsage new to this 2nd post. Thank you very much honeybadger, I wish Dr. Sterling was in my area because I need a new ADD Psychiatrist because obviously I can't go back to mine. My general internist will only give me 1 month of meds so if anyone knows a good ADD psychiatrist in the Lakewood Long Beach, CA area and I'd be willing to drive 30 minutes please let me know because I have now tried 2 doctors and they both suck.

I have been on the adderal which I added to my strattera 1 1/2 weeks ago and it seems to be working good. I am still not sure if I really need the Adderal because I thought the Strattera worked fine by itself but since I went to this new doctor and he wanted me to try adderal I am trying it. But he wants me off the strattera because he doesn't believe me that it works for me because as I said he said it is a terrible medication so his idea is I just need adderal alone and I'll be fine. So I'm still testing the Adderal and Strattera together since I refuse to go off my Strattera.

By the way I also take Gaba capsules and grape seed oil capsules and fish oil capsules and they are just food supplements not herbs, because they all work for ADD in case any one is interested you can research them online on google or whatever your search engine is. Thanks again for any replies.

Yes sarahsweets my other psychiatrist ordered the Strattera and the new Psychiatrist won't refill it for me because he says it doesn't work but he is wrong it does work.

Re: Strattera and Adderall

I've never heard of a doctor who thinks Strattera is a terrible med. I need to meet that doctor, because he is so right!

Context - I've been on Strattera AND Adderall XR as a combo 1-2 punch. Strattera was so awesome:
- irritability: gone
- groggy slow mornings: gone
- focus: meh a bit better
- hyperactivity: bye bye
- anxiety: see ya

Then eventually I stopped taking it and my body immediately became better. It does nasty things to your body. I don't know what, I just know that it does. I think it won't be long before Strattera is declared unsafe and becomes the new Vioxx.

Anyway... I take back what I said about your doctor... Strattera *does* work and it works very well. But I think it'll kill you. As for amphetamines, they've been around for 100 years or close to, and they've reliably proven to be very safe. My recommendation is to continue on Strattera if you feel it's effective for you, but listen to your body very closely.

Adding meds will just muddle up what's working and what isn't. But if you aren't getting side effects that are causing any problems, I see no reason changing things!

And if you're interested, Dr. Sterling does phone consultations. If you can't find a real specialist, give him a call.

Pedalpounder, were you always 100% religious about never missing your dose with strattera? Because it's the only drug that works in a way that requires intensely accurate doses and titration.

Also, Strattera is really a last-resort before desoxyn, as it's kind of a fringe medicine. Some people could never live without it. Others hate it.

Strattera is extremely safe and non habit forming, as far as the clinical studies have shown. Vioxx's problem was very, very hard to track.

Re: Strattera and Adderall

My granddaughter has been taking Strattera for over a year. It helps the
most with her emotional control, but it helps overall. Just not as much as
the Concerta did. So the psy-doc added a small dose of XR Adderall to it.
The combination seems to be working very well.

Everyone reacts to these meds differently. That's the reason they keep
coming up with new forms and new combinations. Vyvanse works really
well for a lot of people but my granddaughter had really horrible side
effects on that med.

I'm sorry you have a doctor now who isn't willing to listen when you tell
him that the Strattera is working for you. When something is working,
why mess with it? I've wasted too many years with doctors who didn't
listen to me, I won't do it anymore.
