Does Adderall cause evening bruxism?

I don't grind my teeth at all during the day but I grind them at night something fierce and I literally think they are going to fall out of my head. I got a night guard but I bite down on it so hard that that it is very uncomfortable. Is this caused by the Adderall? If so, why only at night? I take IR and it seems it wouldn't be active in my system in the middle of the night. Anyway, if I don't grind during the day, when it is most active, why at night? Would a switch to Dexedrine help this? Or maybe Dexedrine for my third dose?

I take the IR and notice it day and night, but it's lessened since I lowered my dosage.

Re: Does Adderall cause evening bruxism?

It happened to me more on Ritalin than Adderall, but seeing as they're both stimulant medications, I see no reason why it couldn't happen with both.

As far as your question concerning Dexedrine...I just recently made the switch from Adderall to Dex and the difference is night and day. A low dose of Adderall (5mg IR 2x a day) would give me jitters, make my heart do all kinds of crazy stuff, make certain tics worse, etc. 5mg IR 2x a day of Dex doesn't even feel like I'm on a drug; no physical effects whatsoever...at least so far.

I too have problems with grinding my teeth, maybe it does have something to do with the adderall or with other medications you're taking. Try talking to your doctor about your problem.

Re: Does Adderall cause evening bruxism?

old thread but i dont care lol, itll turn up in someones search. my adderall has always caused this to some degree, but it also escalates in relation to stress. i do it all the time as well, more so during the day, and do not realize im dong it till my jaw starts cramping. looked at bite guards, that were 20+ dollars, and opted for the 6$ sports mouth guard.

Re: How to Spot an Abuser on Your First Date

Bruxism (teeth grinding) but I was like this during my first year on adderall and only on the prescribed dosages of 20-30mg daily. Now after a year it has pretty much gone away

Re: Does Adderall cause evening bruxism?

Some people seem to be more prone to stimulant bruxism than others. Adderall goes straight to my jaw, even after years of daily use, although at my typical dosage it is more a "tightness" than a "grinding". It is most pronounced (my point of reference here is Adderall IR tablets) after the initial 'peak', becoming apparent perhaps 2 hours after my midday dose and lingering into the early evening.

I don't know but I notice when I am on my meds..I tend to gritt my teeth more. Not a grind. I also do it at night and my teeth are cracking from it. The mouth gaurd I got was called Doctor's Choice at places like CVS or what ever pharmacy you may have. I really like it. I have a bad gag problem and it doesn't cause it. You also make it mold to your mouth. It's about $35.00. I think my dog ate mine so I need to get anoth..lol
I have also noticed on other post ppl asking the same thing you are. So either it's our stress or the meds. I did it before I knew I had ADHD..I really think it was from a long long time ago I did EX a few times. That made me do it when rolling and I notice now I do it. Maybe I did before and never realized.

Re: Does Adderall cause evening bruxism?

if a medicine makes you ill then stop and look for another

stims can cause teeth grinding
or worsen teeth grinding if had it before.

either decrease your dose, stop taking it 7or hours before sleep, look for another med that is less stim or not a stim at all.

Maybe you are misdiagnosed and do not have adhd at all. ADHD, OCD, depression, biopolarity ...etc. can be traced to similair parts of the brain and inbalance in similar trasnmitters. In another words ADHD is not very far off from depression. And ADHD can have an effect on a person that he or she might get depressed, and so on.

In my opinion and according to what scientists know about the brain functions so far,
ADHDers can think like normal people, the problem is the flood of other ideas and emotions that causes so much "noise" in the background, those distracting ideas can get so "loud" that the ADHDers can not see or focus on what needs to be done or what is more important.
Stims to an ANHDer, if used effectivley, can actually calm these noises, that is why some fail more "calm" after taking a medication where everybody is surprised because they know that stims should make you "feel like you just a had a red bull" which is not the purpose of ADHD stims any ways, stims are not like coffee.
ADHDrs feel calm because they act like "filter"if used correctly.
they supress the noise in the background so you clearly see what is important "good signal". and the rest is silence and that is why they should feel calm.
But if not an ADHDer takes a stim he will go from seeing a good signal into seeying alot of noise becuase if stims are not used correctly they actually act as implifiers for all signals. causing more noise than the people with adhd. (lots of signals with low-med apmplitude vs. lots of signals with hi amplitude).
One side effect of that is teeth grinding. Even if it occurs at night. Actually during the day you might be doing something else and not notice to relie the surges of dopamine and flood of signals. some might play with their hair, nail biting, leg shaking, speeding while driving, even talking too much or walking in circles. At night that might switch to teeth grinding or rollin in bed and now days playing with the iphone and such.

Yes and no. grinding your teeth can be a side effect but some people naturally grind their teeth.

Adderral makes me grind my teeth way more than ritalin does. I got one from target which I like a lot, however, i can't really talk with it lol. Do you wear it during the day?

Re: Does Adderall cause evening bruxism?

Whoa, I've been recently grinding my teeth all day and night but didn't even think twice that it could be my medicine. I just figured it was a habit that I picked up because I've been stressed. Good to know that I'm not alone!
