Fish oil and coughing?

My 7 yr old son has had a hacking cough since June, going on about three months now. When it first started, he had a cold, but the cold has long since gone away and the cough remains. He was off his ADHD meds for the summer when this started, except for Lovaza (a prescription fish oil supplement) that his doctor recommended, and a magnesium supplement. He's been to his pediatrician twice, and an ear, nose, & throat doc three times so far (we have a 4th appt. coming up in a few days) and so far they can't find any medical reason for this cough. My husband says he's done research online and found that fish oil supplements can cause chronic cough in some people. I've gone online myself and can't really find anything confirming this other than a couple of obscure articles. I was wondering if anyone here had tried fish oil for themselves or their child and had any coughing as a side effect? We stopped giving it to him this morning just to see if it helps. I'm so frustrated with trying to figure out what's causing this hack he has.

Re: Fish oil and coughing?

Eliminating it is probably your best (maybe only) way to find out. Might be an allergy?

Is your fish oil "molecularly distilled" EPA and DHA? I can't handle the smell of any other type.

Flax oil made me burp flax flavour. I prefer that going down, with butter and jam.

It definitely sounds like an allergy to me. I would discontinue ASAP. If the doctor disagrees, feel free to start up again but better safe than sorry.

Re: Fish oil and coughing?

I would stop the Lovaza for a couple of weeks and see if it clears up. If it does, you might consider starting him on a a high quaility liquid fish oil, like Carlson's. Orange or lemon flavored, and no fishy aftertastes.

My guess would be that it might be something in the gel-cap that he has an allergy to, as opposed to the fish oil itself.

This is a distinct possibility from what I've read over the years. Not just
with supplements, but even with prescription medications and allergies
to fillers or coatings or gel caps.

Re: Fish oil and coughing?

my son developed a chronic "cough" when he was in preschool, and after several dr visits and a trip to a specialist, we found out he had a "habit" cough, now it just transitions to other things, ie, snorting, clearing his throat, and sometimes its gone for weeks, then it will come back. the dr's may call it a tic or a form of terets syndrome...but whatever it is it is not a true cough...I can always tell the difference
this maybe something to consider??

Re: Fish oil and coughing?

I give my daughter fish oil in liquid form. Its peach flavored and she gets a spoonful every morning. Its at the health food store, brand is Natural Factors. That would at least eliminate the capsule being the problem.

I don't think there's any way to know for sure; you could take him off the fish oil and see if the cough clears up. If it does, I would buy a different brand of fish oil and try again. Are you giving gummies or gelcaps, or liquid?
