Question "What Are You Thinking About?"

me: "What are you thinking about?"

other person: "Nothing."

me: "No, really. What are you thinking about?"

other person: "I'm not thinking about anything."

me: "Okay, you're lying. That's impossible. How can you not be thinking about anything."

other person: "I'm not lying. I'm just not thinking about anything."

me:

Anyone else have this conversation several times in their life?

I am never, ever not thinking about anything. Right now I am on meds, and I'm thinking about how slow my computer is, remembering my ex-boyfriends with whom I've had this same conversation, wondering when the page will load that will allow me to continue working, and listening to the song "Razzle Dazzle" from Chicago which is playing in my head, complete with dancing, costumes, and sets.

So, what are you thinking about?

Re: "What Are You Thinking About?"

I translate "nothing" into "nothing worth talking about" - simply because that's the answer I give when someone asks me that question.

I used to give them an actual answer, but after about the 20th line item and glazed look in their eyes when it seemed like I wasn't slowing down on my list, I found it easier to say "nothing" lol

Re: "What Are You Thinking About?"

woah....I was just "thinking" about this topic today! exactly, I've always got something going on in my head like 100% of the time. I asked my wife if she's like this and she stated that most of the time her head is clear and quiet.

the only time I was EVER like that was the day I popped a pill of 40mg vyvanse. Then it was like someone had vacuumed out my head, turned off the music and told all the jumbled thoughts that the party was over and it was time to go home.

seriously felt lonely....but at least I'll always have that memory of what it feels like!

Re: "What Are You Thinking About?"

That's what I figured too, Gypsy, except that my boyfriend swears that he actually isn't thinking anything.

To avoid me being all grumpy, he could at least say something simple as "pancakes", but he continues with his "nothing" story. Which basically means I should trust him on that, because he does avoid conflicts.

And yes, Peche, I've had that conversation already more than just a few times. What the hell? How can someone *not think*? Isn't that... boring? I remember the first time on Concerta, I managed to actually not think for like... half a minute? It was horrible.

Re: "What Are You Thinking About?"

Some people can not think about anything. Seems non-ADHDers are quite good at it.

Usually when I say it is because I am nothing thinking of anything that ought to be said or is worth conversation.

Re: "What Are You Thinking About?"

My mind either runs so fast it is hard to think about what I am thinking.

OR

It is on pause and it is a complete blank, usually because I was asked to think about what I was thinking.

Re: "What Are You Thinking About?"

I find that men in particular use "nothing " in place of not being ready to talk or engage in conversation about whatever it is you're thinking about.

Re: "What Are You Thinking About?"

Two options:

1. thinking about something, regardless of its value, meaning
2. thinking about why you don't think...

You always think, sorry.
That must be hiding his thought.

It is as simple as that!!!!!!!!!

Re: "What Are You Thinking About?"

Hahahaha I have this type of conversation with my boyfriend allll the time. He can be not thinking about anything if I ask him that... I won't accuse him of lying about it or get suspicious, cause I know him, but I find it amazing that people can think about nothing. It seems my mind always has something to say, even if it's only a little thing hardly worth saying out loud, I'm almost always thinking something.

Right now I'm thinking about finally applying for a passport.

Re: "What Are You Thinking About?"

Before meds I was usually thinking about so many things at once that if somebody asked me, it was pretty hard to answer. Now I can usually say, "I'm thinking about what to have for dinner," or "I'm thinking about dark matter," or something.

Re: "What Are You Thinking About?"

Never do people want to talk about their deepest private thoughts. So they tell you "nothing" when you ask them.

On many occasions did I answer "nothing" when asked, when in fact HELL I was thinking about **** alot

Re: "What Are You Thinking About?"

Hubs gave me that answer for years.... figured he was probably thinking about sex and didn't want to tell me.

Adderall's ability to make me only think of three things at one time proved that he just may have been telling the truth, half the time.

Re: "What Are You Thinking About?"

I find my self day dreaming alot, but if someone asks me (like my wife) what are you thinking about I say "nothing". Just because it's too much trouble to explain and then to make sure it is explained in context... I can't be bothered so I say "nothing". When I'm suddenly thinking about my favorite scene from Shaun of the Dead or something I don't want to explain it. I think alot of guys are the same.

Re: "What Are You Thinking About?"

Go to to inattentive forum and you may find posts about people hardly having thoughts in their heads. I even seen on Wrong Planet people talking about hardly having any thoughts.

Me, I'm constantly thinking. I have little arguments in my head with people, I visualise my next chapter (or hear it in my head), I'm thinking about what I've got to do next, I think about that science documentary I watched last night, what's on tonight, when's that 'history of beer' doco going to be on (I no joke just remembered it's on tonight), how basic household objects are made, is it time to take my pill, how long will it take for the pill to wear off, should I eat now or in ten minutes, then some random thought will pop into my head or a song and then I'll begin to analyze that song and question what psychiatric issues the singer has, and then I'll question the validity of classic and quantum physics and work out a solution for testing the theories we still have no answers for...and then I'll think 'nah, that's stupid' and then I'll get out of bed.

I used to share these thoughts with people, but after seeing the looks on their faces after I had spoken them I have stopped sharing.
