Trouble communicating, expressing myself and articulation. Any help?

Hi,

I have trouble communicating, expressing myself and being articulate enough. I have social anxiety, but I think ADD may make it worse. I feel like I can never find the right words to say and have trouble explaining things. I have a hard time telling a story in chronological/sensical order. I'm not on meds, because I don't have an actual diagnosis yet (one psychologist diagnosed me with it after I asked if he thought I had it retroactively after I did 2/3rds of a neuropsych evaluation... now I'm at a specialist to get a 6 hours worth of testing because I want to be absolutely sure) and I'm not sure I want to be on meds yet anyway.

Anyone know some ways to learn to express myself/articulate better? Should I go to a therapist/life coach?

Thanks!

osakhomen:

I had the exact same problems you're having. Adderall instantly solved the articulation problems. I can speak coherently now. That's the one thing that medication instantly fixed. That and my driving was better. I'm with you on the no-medication thing though. I'm currently getting ready to stop taking both my lamictal (for epilepsy) and adderall, as if I get certified as a nocturnal epileptic (which I am) then I don't technically need to be on medication for any reason, and it contributes to my adhd symptoms.

I have the same problem. It seems to be getting worse too (not sure if my anxiety is contributing to this) i was always better at writing than talking but lately, it doesn't seem to matter whether I am talking or writing, I just can't communicate. I am on dexamphetamine too and it doesn't help one bit. I forget simple words when Im trying to think about what to say, and also always getting my words mixed up! I am now getting to the point where it's affecting my work that badly that I can't do my job

Always! telling stories in an order that makes sense to me but no one else;
trying to talk as fast as I think. random references to films or TV that no one gets.

I have no trouble with written communication, though.

("toastmasters": I keep thinking this sounds like classes on bread and toast!)

Re: Trouble communicating, expressing myself and articulation. Any help?

Anonymouslyadd is in toastmasters, he feels like it's helped him a lot....

Social Anxiety and ADHD are sort of a double whammy, they feed off each other, making symptoms of each more noticeable.

something else that feeds into my personal mish mash of ADHD and Anxiety is when I'm talking to someone that doesn't have very good listening skills. I might say "a, b, c..." they'll act like they heard me, then go tell someone I said "a, q, r..." so be careful to not take on the responsiblity for these types of people.... their poor listening skills aren't your problem and don't let them get you stressed out!

Re: Trouble communicating, expressing myself and articulation. Any help?

I suck at verbal speaking. I am great if I can get 2 minutes to write down what I want to say but I can't do it when speaking. I think it's because I have too many options and I am thinking of the perfect thing to say and then it comes out garbled up and shall we say... not good :0

Re: Trouble communicating, expressing myself and articulation. Any help?

ironically for me it's the right dosage of the right med that helps the most. even then I still skip around a lot in conversations I just do it in a more coherent style.

like last night I was talking about armadillos and leprosy and Rene Descartes and the character Sheldon on The Big Bang Theory all at the same time but it made sense at least. or maybe they were just nodding their heads to get me to shut up....???

overall I feel that meds slow down my brain and allow me to access files in my brain in a quick manner, as well as tie together my random ideas in a way that non add'ers can understand.

without meds it's pretty bad I must admit, I can tell the meds are wearing off right now because it's getting harder to clarify my ideas while I'm typing.. etc.. etc...

Ironically, I feel you have explained yourself very well in your original post. I can definitely relate but have not yet discovered a suitable solution. The only thing I can suggest is try to not be so hard on yourself, as in if you fear you are going to fail that's generally going to be the outcome.

Re: Trouble communicating, expressing myself and articulation. Any help?

I'm the same way! It used to be worse until I started working at my current job which involves me talking to customers throughout the whole 9 hour shift. I'm still a lousy talker but I feel more confident now. My problems that I'm trying to work with is remembering what words I want to use, and not talking fast or interrupting the person early. I find that eating a really good breakfast (full of protein) helps, and also a good night sleep the night before

You could try a coach or a therapist to help you conquer your anxiety, because the anxiety makes up a huge part of how we talk and react to people. I STILL can't give people straight eye contact for more then 10 seconds, but I'm working on it.

Re: Trouble communicating, expressing myself and articulation. Any help?

I have the exact same problems and it gets so frustrating especially while at work. I have tried so many different medications and can't find one that really does it for me. I was on Adderall but it made me fill very drugged. Can anyone suggest anything to me?

Re: Trouble communicating, expressing myself and articulation. Any help?

Same here. I have a very hard time explaining myself, or getting my point across. It's like I have all the words in my head, and I know EXACTLY what to say, but to actually SAY it...it's so hard sometimes.

Yeah, I wish I had a projector to beam my head pictures onto the wall. I mostly stick with non verbal gestures and "act" out what I'm trying to say.
