Just diagnosed, Ritalin not working??

Hi!

So long story short; Im 30 yrs old and I guess I've always known I had ADHD but was of the opinion that I could just "tough" it out and not have to resort to pharmaceuticals. However, recently I changed my mind as it was all becoming a bit too hard for me to cope.

I had my appointment with a Psychiatrist yesterday and he confirmed my suspicions and diagnosed me with ADHD and gave me two choices either Ritalin or Dexamphetamine something, saying that both had a 95% success rate. Having no idea, I picked Ritalin purely because Ive heard the name mentioned more often.

So this morning before work I took 1 10mg Ritalin tablet ( Dr said take 4 a day max ) and sat on the train and waited for it to kick in. I cant really describe the feeling, mild euphoria and hyper alertness but my concentration was really in no way improved, which is upsetting.

I guess what I'm asking is has anyone else had the same affects? Should I lower/raise the dosage? or perhaps I should continue trialing it for a bit longer? Or maybe I should try the dexamphetamine?

I realise these are questions I should be asking my Dr but at $300 a visit I'm in no rush to go back so soon, though I will if need be.

If anybody can shed any light it would be greatly appreciated

Re: Just diagnosed, Ritalin not working??

were you diagnosed the inattentive type? Or the hyper or may combined type?

check the medication section of the forum. There is actually a Ritalin section with 1000's of post similar to yours. Many quesions and many answers. Getting adjusted to your meds and finding the proper dose takes some time. There are so many factors to consider and each person reacts different to stimulant drugs.

Good luck and welcome to the forum!

Thanks for the tip, I'll check that out!

No, the doc didn't really specify but I'd say it would be the attentive type.

Well actually i called my doctor and he suggested taking 2 x 10mg at once if just having one was making me feel hyper so I did and felt much better like my concentration was starting to improve so the the following morning I took 3 and it actually worked in that i didnt feel hyper at all and I was calm and could concentrate.

Given that I've deduced it takes 3 x 10mg tablets to be benificial am I limited to just taking this dose once a day being that I was advised to take 4 tablets a day max?
