GP Tomorrow

I have my first appointment to see the GP tomorrow and I am not looking forward to it one little bit! I have written down everything I can think of from syptoms, to my history to the present day and how I am generally as a day to day person. Is there anything that anybody can recommend to me that will help me get my doctor to take me seriously?? I have an ADHD child who has recently been diagnosed but I do not think that its going to be as easy for myself.

Re: GP Tomorrow

I am sorry I have no advise but I am in the same boat. My GP put me on phentermine because I had been on it before for weight loss and it helped me focus, but I am meeting with psychotherapist tomorrow for an initial assessment before seeing the psych. They got me in very quick at this place because I have been harming myself and having suicdial thoughts because I am so sick of doing things wrong or not knowing how to do them, and generally beating myself up for being stupid, etc. Part of the problem here is I believe my 11 year old daughter has ADHD but she does well in school so we have not done anything about it because she doesn't want to take medication, she says " I want to be ME." Another part of the problem is if they want proof from childhood 1) my mom is extremely against any form of medication and is basically in denial about my mental health, although I try to share with her. 2) Dad has his own mental health issues that he won't take care of and won't acknowledge and doesn't remember from one second to the next, and thinks stuff that never happened or was never said - no way is he reliable about my childhood.
I am afraid to ask my mom for my report cards and progress reports from elementary through high school (if she has them) because she will want to know why I want them and if I tell her, I am in for a looooong lecture about how nothing is wrong with me.
I am super nervous. Hope everything went well for you : )

Re: GP Tomorrow

In addition to your history make sure you include from childhood through now, your symptoms, and how your symptoms have negatively affected your life and well-being.

Remember, you can always get another opinion if you don't think they took you seriously.

Re: GP Tomorrow

Sometimes, a psychiatrist is better for diagnosing adhd than a gp.

Re: GP Tomorrow

Only a psychiatrist or pediatrician can diagnose in the UK. Since you have a child with ADHD you should get a referral ok. Only problem is in some areas the local PCT have withdrawn funding for adult ADHD and lots of GPs dont believe adults can have it.

Re: GP Tomorrow

Yeah I am curious to know as well. I had the initial intake meeting with a therapist today, who said there is a reason to suspect ADHD, but there is def. also some depression and anxiety - failing to see that it stems from the asskicking I give myself every time I screw something up. I now have a psychiatric evaluation in 2 weeks.
