Hello everyone I am newly diagnosed with having ADHD and have now been on Vyvance for 2 weeks, I'm a 34 year old male. Wile on the meds it seems to have an overwhelming since of calmness and also seems to slow my mind down, oddly enough I seem to be able to hold more intelligent conversations with everyone even people I don't really enjoy being around off the meds, I also seem to have less anxiety, I don't really have any additional energy per say, just more stamina and an overwhelming since of high self confidence, people seem to be nicer to me and likewise I seem to be nicer to everyone else, I don't really have a uphoric feeling that I hear a lot of people talking about, I seem to enjoy work better and tasks seem eaiser to complete wile on the meds, I did notice that when my work load is light or non existent like on lazy Sundays when I don't have anything pressing or to do,it makes me sleepy but as long as I have something to focus on I can keep going and going and going, but with no work to do its like I'm all dressed up and no where to go. Is this normal or is this a honeymoon period that I am going thru? Odviously I'll share this with the dock but I'm waiting on an appointment and am just curious how others feel on the meds.

Re: Total Calmness.
I'd say that much of what you have described is 'wedding night honey' and will fade sooner or later. Like real marriages, the honeymoon feeling will fade and if you want it to succeed, you will have to get to work - mainly on changing things in yourself 'cause things are what they are with respects to who you are looking in the mirror at.
A lot of what you are feeling - the overwhelming sense of calmness, wanting to chat people up, majik sense of self-confidence, etc., is euphoria by definition. And that is something that you don't want to be chasing. A boost in self confidence ought to come from bona-fide accomplishments such as finishing University in the alloted time for your couse of study, finishing the week at work without a ring from your boss angrily demanding why you didn't submit the report on Friday morning again, meeting personal goals that have always alluded you, etc., etc. <----That is what the medication is for; to clear the cobwebs as much as possible to allow you to come up with a workable game-plan and get on those daily, mostly monotonous routines that are needed to see your goals through. Feeling euphoric and happy is a natural side-effect of the medication for some; but its a red-herring and it won't last; medication tolerance is nature's way of ensuring that the principal that you have to rob Peter in order to pay Paul is a constant throughout. The good Lord, in His wisdom, only alloted for so much seratonin and dopamine for use in the human body before the bank is busted and payback is a nasty doggie when Peter starts issuing margin calls. Learn to despise euphoria early and you will be happy - happy in a sound way - later on!

Re: Total Calmness.
BelToller,
That was a really thoughtful post. I liked how you described how boosts of confidence should be obtained. |

Thank you kindly, but after a reread, my post sounds a bit self-righteous as I neglected to add that the 'how something should be obtained' in an ideal that no one can fully reach and things aren't that cut n dried. There's nothing wrong if one's work-load seems lightened and if the meds help someone who's a bit socially avoidant to be more outgoing - thats a positive. Just wanted to alert the OP to keep a watch out for getting caught up in chemically induced happiness without a cooresponding real change in our approach to things somewhere in along the road.

Re: Total Calmness.
Stimulants that I've taken make me feel so much more calm because they quiet all the different "trains of thoughts" bouncing around in my head every second of every day. To just be able to focus on one thing at a time and do if well is calming to me.
I've only been on stimulants three months, but I don't see this as a honeymoon period, I see it as how these medications are supposed to work. I can also focus much better on my studies because I'm not bouncing around reading the whole assignment instead of focusing on one thing at a time. |
