Career Poll- What do you do for a living?

I just wanted to see what others do for a living here. I've been in sales mostly until I moved to more clerical work recently. I'm trying to figure out what I would enjoy the most and be most successful at.

I am a vintage watch dealer ...as in mechanical wind ups and automatics.....and sell online and at antique shows.....but there's a lot of messing around with them too....to get them to look purty and run right ....

so a bit of skill involved too ....

I'm a supervisor at a chain drug store. I must say it's a good fit for me, lots of moving around and staying busy and I've been there so long it's more like a family reunion when I go to work lol. The only problem it presents for me is remembering everything that needs to be done in the course of a day, thankfully my boss understands my condition and leaves me numbered priority lists

Re: Career Poll- What do you do for a living?

I'm somewhere between engineering and skilled trade. I'm currently back in school and reconsidering my options. I'll most likely end up doing economics/actuary type work, but there's still a chance that I'll end up in comp. sci. or teaching.

Recovering jack of all trades. Last full time "permanent" job was a tour of duty at the front desk of a subsidized hotel located literally on Seattle's "skid road". (Yesler Way.)

Now "prematurely retired", receiving Social Security Disability.

Re: Career Poll- What do you do for a living?

Its nice to see so many responses to the poll already. I have thought about becoming a dealer vintage antique stuff but that is probably when I am day dreaming lol. My current dilemma is between computer science( programming, systems admin type work) and more hands on like becoming Cisco certified.

I think I enjoy learning about programming but once the thrill of learning or figuring out the language my motivation might stop. I'm still kind of debating whether computer programming would be a good fit. I think that I would be good at the big picture stuff but if the job became more about the details I might kind of not enjoy it as much.

Also thinking about becoming a systems technician since it would be more hands on. I worked at a bank once as a banker and I hated it, I was really good at the sales stuff but once it came to the details I was written up for not following procedure. The interacting with the public thing also became very difficult after a while so I definitely think more skilled or technical trade would suit me better.

Re: Career Poll- What do you do for a living?

I work in IT tech support, and also in adult ministries at my church. My paid job is with computers, though. It's not something I want to do forever, but right now I enjoy it. My degree is actually not even in computers, it's in anthropology, but I sort of stumbled into this IT support job and it was a good fit.

If you aren't detail oriented or tend to get caught up in the nitty gritty details and lose interest, I do not suggest the computer sciences for you. A lot of working with computers, especially tech troubleshooting or writing scripts/programming, is all about little details. Overall I enjoy my job a lot, but that is one of the few things that I dislike about my work. I'm not a very detail oriented person, I am much more big-picture minded, so having to deal with the little details in this job is difficult and unpleasant for me.

Oddly, I'm good with details. In fact, I'd say that I tend to obsess over them. Maybe I should seriously consider computery stuff.

I've worked in different areas ranging from fast food hospitality to cleaning and sales to animal care and aged care but at the moment I work as a disability support worker/teacher aide.

Re: Career Poll- What do you do for a living?

I'm a librarian at a university. A perfect job for ADHD-I types, I'd say. Sure as hell beats journalism, which I did for about 1 year before I burned out. Too many things to remember...

Re: Career Poll- What do you do for a living?

System Administrator/Programmer among other things. To generalize I maintain and install the servers that allow approx. 80,000 people in rural areas and businesses in the same locations connect to the internet, email, web hosting and such. The stress of this job stacked on top of my ADD kills me every day.
