Went to ER for Anxiety- ended up in a mental ward!!

With all my life's problems last Wednesday afternoon, I had a severe panick attack and drove myself to the ER, which is only about a mile away.

I've been having them at least twice daily the last month, only to be put on something by my new pdoc that's supposed to help with anxiety as well as depression. Well it hasn't been working and the panic attacks are getting worse.

When I got questioned by the tech, she asked if I felt suicidal. I said no.
Then another tech came in and said the ER Dr. wanted a pregnancy test. I told him my tubes were tied, I didn't need one. He comes back a few minutes later saying the Dr. would like one anyways. Ok so I did it, no problem there.
Then after that he wants to draw blood- ok still no problem with that, but I'm still all jittery and panicky.

The Dr comes in, asks about the anxiety, how often it happens and what triggers it. By this time the panic had subsided, and I told her everything that was going on in my life. She asks if I feel like harming myself. I said sometimes, only when I'm having an attack though.

She asks if I have a suicide plan, I said no. Then she asks how often do I feel suicidal when having these panic attacks. i told her I never felt suicidal, that about 2 out of 6 attacks I feel that death is the only way to get them to stop since I'm not being medicated properly for the anxiety attacks.

It all happened so fast- she automatically concluded that I was a suicidal threat to myself and said I would be transported via ambulance to Trip****, which is a mental ward.

I told her NO, I'm not suicidal I don't need to go, I just want the panic attacks to stop. She bluntly says I told her I thought of killing myself when I have panic attacks, and that if I was refusing to go, she would call the police and have me escorted there!

The Dr. left the room, I was alone. I called my brother quickly on my cellphone, he said RUN! lol... so I did. Luckily I was in my street clothes and not a gown, so I was able to leave the room, and the hospital. I got outside, and drove home in a panic.

When i got home, I briefly explained to my boyfriend to expect the cops to show up. Sure enough 5 minutes later they did with an ambulance.

He talked to the police for about a good ten minutes, trying to convince them that it was all a mistake, a misunderstanding between the Dr. and me.

Unfortunately in the end, I had to go with them

When we got to the mental ward, I was asked a battery of different questions by techs, nurses, a social worker and a Dr. In the end, they all decided I was NOT a suicidal threat and they released me 3 hrs. later.

Now this really made me mad. If that Dr in the ER truly thought I was a suicidal threat, why on earth was I left all alone in the room and able to just freely walk out of the hospital??

The mental ward didn't do a thing for me except give me a bunch of resources to help my situation, which I did call the next day and got nothing but 'the run around'.

I start a new job on the 10th, one of my issues is i still cant focus on a damn thing and my new pdoc wont change my meds.

So I made another appt. with a different pdoc, even though I have to go thru an assessment first all which will take a total of about 6 weeks to see the new pdoc.

Am I wrong in wanting a pdoc who lets me help decide in my own care, rather than one who decides strictly for me? I didn't even suggest anything specific, just something different to help me focus and help with the panic attacks and he refused.

Re: Went to ER for Anxiety- ended up in a mental ward!!

I think you absolutely have the right to have a say in your own care.

Telling the doctor what problems you're having and asking for something to
help with them seems very logical to me.

You don't say how long you've been on the new meds or whether the doctor
asked you to give it a little more time to adjust to them.

A doctor who invalidates it when told that the meds seem to make the
problem worse isn't the right doctor - in my opinion.

If you really feel the meds are making things worse, I hope you'll check
with a pharmacist about the safety of stopping them altogether.

And to top it all off, it sounds like the ER doctor invalidated you as well
when you responded that you don't feel suicidal and don't have a suicide
plan. He kept asking until he got the answer he thought was right. Good
thing not all doctors think patients with Panic attacks need to be locked
away in the psych ward. Crikey!

I would report him to the state medical review board if that happened to
me and explain that all kinds of folks at the psych ward determined that
you absolutely weren't a threat to yourself, so he was clearly out of line.

Re: Went to ER for Anxiety- ended up in a mental ward!!

That is unbelievable!! Did it happen in the US? That ER doc must have been really young and stupid. I had insane headache pain which resulted in a panic attack 2 years ago, it was unbearable and I drove myself to the ER telling them I couldn't breathe etc. first thing the doc did, after they draw blood and hooked me up to various machines was gave me a sedative and then pain killers. I was discharged with a week's prescription for Xanax and Vicodin for pain.

Re: Went to ER for Anxiety- ended up in a mental ward!!

WOW!! I can't believe that happened to you!!!

I went to the dr with a BABY and said I was having thoughts of killing myself and killing my baby. I was set up with medication and therapy. They let me go home.

I went to the ER with panic attacks after 2 days of no relief. I was given some Ativan and sent home.

Sounds like someone was eager to follow some protocol they had yet to exercise. It like they were practising a fire drill.

"OOOOOH...here's one!"

I would be flippin mad.

Re: Went to ER for Anxiety- ended up in a mental ward!!

That sucks that you had to go through that. I've dealt with panic attacks for years, before i went on klonopin they were really bad. I know what you mean about feeling like death is the only way out of a bad panic attack, but I wonder if the doctor misunderstood you there?

Anybody who has had a bad panic attack knows the feeling, the panic hits you and you literally feel like you are going to die! but it's not a plan to die ime, it's just this feeling like "omg I'm gonna die, I can't breathe, my hearts beating too fast, my hands are cold...etc..."

I'm guessing the doctor was inexperienced with panic disorder. I also think you should have a say in your treatment, if your pdoc isn't receptive to your suggestions that's no good. My pdoc is always open to my opinion and if I bring up a medication that I've researched and think may help she'll prescribe it IF she agrees it may help.

Hope you work things out!

Re: Went to ER for Anxiety- ended up in a mental ward!!

I came close to similar when doing intake for therapy recently. I thought I had clearly explained I wasn't a danger to myself, but what the intake person heard made her worry I was. That ER doctor sounds very over vigilant about the possibility, as it doesn't sound like you said you wanted to kill yourself at all. And I think perhaps quite ignorant about panic attacks.

Many sympathies for a really bad experience.

yes,

This happened in the US. And Lunacie, I think you are right- that doc kept asking until she got the answer she wanted.

I wouldn't be surprised if she has some kind of quota to make to send patients to the suicide hospital!

It just feels like no one in the medical profession world cares I am having these panic attacks, I feel all alone when needing medical help for it. I have family support and you guys here on the forum who are great, but it seems these Dr's just either don't care or don't want to help.

@Raye - I recommend you see your primary care or psychiatrist and tell them about the panic attacks. If they've been happening a lot more frequent then usual, they'll prescribe Klonopin 0.5-1mg/day.

Re: Went to ER for Anxiety- ended up in a mental ward!!

There are definitely plenty of doctors who care very much about patients who are having panic attacks, I've personally been amazed at how compassionate some of them are.

I've experienced the flipside as well, these doctors weren't apathetic towards my condition or anything I just think they lacked experience in that area.

Find someone who specializes in panic disorder if possible, it's a very reassuring and comforting experience, knowledge is power so the more you learn the less afraid you'll be regarding panic attacks.

I would contact the risk manager of the hospital and file a complaint against the doctor. A risk manager's job is to make sure that their doctors are following the law and doing their job correctly. They need to know if this stuff is happening. There are not many checks and balances in hospitals, but a good risk manager can make all the difference.

You should take action against this doctor.

If she thought you were a harm to yourself but then left you alone in the room that is just poor judgement on her part.

Sounds like you had a rough experience.
