A plentitude of courses.

Just announced in the Houston Chronicle:

Quote:
Rice University is going global by participating in a groundbreaking experiment that offers free online courses to people from around the world.
They are being offered at Coursera

https://www.coursera.org/

From the site

Quote:
About Coursera

We are a social entrepreneurship company that partners with the top universities in the world to offer courses online for anyone to take, for free. We envision a future where the top universities are educating not only thousands of students, but millions. Our technology enables the best professors to teach tens or hundreds of thousands of students.

Through this, we hope to give everyone access to the world-class education that has so far been available only to a select few. We want to empower people with education that will improve their lives, the lives of their families, and the communities they live in.
The Universities involved:

Duke University
University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign
California Institute of Technology
University of Toronto
University of Michigan
University of Virginia
Johns Hopkins University
University of California, San Francisco
University of Washington
Princeton University
École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne
Rice University
University of Edinburgh
Stanford University
Georgia Institute of Technology
University of Pennsylvania

Enjoy,

Dizfriz

As an add on, I found this article in the NYT on Coursera.

Re: A plentitude of courses.

This seems to be the next step from existing free online courses such as iTunes University. I had watched a couple of ADHD-related seminars at iTunes U, and the newer courses will include peer mentoring and collaboration.

I graduated from one of the Coursera universities, and I hope there will eventually be some non-theoretical courses that ADHD people can actually use in their daily life.

Re: A plentitude of courses.

I've got a coursera class coming up in August I think. It's either stats or gamification.

I feel ya! Fortunately there's been some progress on the open access front. And most articles that have NIH funding you can get access to via PubMedCentral.

Here are a couple of links to sources for free journal articles.

Re: A plentitude of courses.

I found a couple of courses that I might be interested in if I ever find the time:

- Drugs and the Brain: "You’ll learn how drugs enter the brain, how they act on receptors and ion channels, and how “molecular relay races” lead to changes in nerve cells and neural circuits that far outlast the drugs themselves."
- Basic Behavioural Neurology

Re: A plentitude of courses.

I signed up for the music class. Really looking forward to the experience.

It says to try to catch as much live music as you can, and we're about to head to a 5-day music festival two days after the class starts. I'll be ahead of the game. lol

Thanks again for sharing this.
