Very interesting. I'm always amazed by what some folks on this forum are like in person. Some people I've met. Others' "personalities" I infer from their comments. For example, one that stood out to me was when someone was telling FracturedStory that she didn't seem autistic, and she said, "Oh, if you met me in person, the hand flapping would give me away."



It is hard to imagine her flapping her hands, because I "know" her here, but in my regular life I don't "know" anyone who flaps their hands, if that makes sense.

It's very interesting to me how much the technology of the forum affects social hierarchy. There are folks on the forum who are very "dominant" in this environment, but who would not likely be considered "dominant," in their usual, in-person communications.

It makes me realize how much more depth is out there in the world than I realize. Through this place, I have gained a new appreciation of what "diversity" means.

And full disclosure: I probably qualify as someone who is moderately "dominant" in person. By "moderately," I mean that I may well steamroll over a lot of folks without realizing it. But there are certainly others who steamroll over me, if that makes sense...

I don't know how dominant I come across on fora, but in real life I prefer not to talk a lot to people, although I do talk a lot to people I want to talk to. I know that certain people tend to steamroll me very easily, though, and that particular conversational dynamic isn't really possible on a forum.

Ok, Fortune, that is a perfect example of what I mean about "diversity." In a million years, it would not occur to me to think "hand flapping is highly underrated..." And from this place, I know that people whose opinions I value believe otherwise!

That was mostly a joke but there is a fairly negative perception of stims like hand flapping, or in general anything that stands out as unusual. Instead of focusing on why autistic people do these things, most efforts seem to be focused on preventing them. That is, they're simply bad because they're deemed so. There are concerns such as being bullied for it and such, but in and of themselves they're not bad and often helpful.

Rocking, for example, can ease a lot of anxiety.

This was what I was getting at. I would guess the average forum member would guess me to be about 35% introvert, 65% extrovert.

Anyway since BR mucked it up, for everyone's info I am 96% Introverted.

Having dispensed with that, let the discussion of forum personalities vs "real life" personalities continue....

I have no clue how I differ on forums v. real life. There are only a few people on forums I regularly interact with IRL. I would guess I'm no different IRL than I am on forums.

However, I'm not good at self-assessment.

the bit with what're we like on/offline or appear to be in this respect, insofar as getting energy from solitude/feeling worn by interaction, i know i score high there, and that's part of why it sucks i'm also a complete spectacle all the time. i don't know which elements come through more on forum to others. i suspect it's dependent on how well or how long the person doing judging has known me.
