I am p***ed off at Selena Gomez.
I was reading Teen Vogue today (don't judge - my mom got me a subscription and I can't resist looking at awesome clothes I can't afford
). Selena Gomez happens to be this month's cover girl, and when I read this comment from her I wanted to throw the magazine in the shredder and write an angry letter to somebody:"Selena has been working full-time since she was seven years old...'I'm so bipolar,' she says of her juggling act." I mean REALLY. Do you know how many young, impressionable girls read Teen Vogue? A lot. The kind of young impressionable girls who will want to repeat the crap that comes out of Selena Gomez's mouth. I'm not even bipolar myself but it just makes me so angry that people flippantly toss the names of these disorders around like they're nothing. And it's not like this was one stupid thing that one girl said, this comment had to go through some kind of editing process before it went into this article and no one saw it as being inappropriate to print? Also, that doesn't even make sense. This girl doesn't have a clue. I'm not an expert on bipolar disorder, but I'm pretty sure it doesn't have much to do with working on a lot of projects at once. I didn't have a whole lot of respect for this magazine or for Selena Gomez prior to reading this, but now I'm just plain mad at them. |

Re: I am p***ed off at Selena Gomez.
She IS young, but still ... you aren't the only one took offense at the comment.
Her BFF Demi Lovato really does have bipolar. Was she just trying to connect with Demi, or was she dissing her? http://celebs.gather.com/viewArticle...81474979281903 http://www.evilbeetgossip.com/2011/0...s-cute-trendy/ http://wonderwall.msn.com/music/why-...-1617294.story Nope, teenage mood swings are not the same thing as a mental disorder.

Re: I am p***ed off at Selena Gomez.
My neice is bi-polar and it is nothing to joke or be flippant about. For my neice, it's devastating and debilitating for her social life. And she can't be trusted to be left alone because she may hurt herself. She is only 12 years old. And she doesn't understand why she feels the way she feels.
My sister and BIL are both very well educated and they have family therapy as well as individual therapy for her. It's freakin hard for all of them.Surely Selena has no clue what it actually means, or she wouldn't have said it, i don't know how she thinks. But I do agree that it could have been edited or a point should have been made to her that that was not ok. Because I do agree that other impressionable kids will follow suit and talk like that.

Re: I am p***ed off at Selena Gomez.
Rough draft of my angry letter to Teen Vogue. Used some of my original post and borrowed the word "debilitating" from phantasm
![]() Dear Teen Vogue, I was shocked to find this comment in the article "One Direction": "Selena has been working full-time since she was seven years old...'I'm so bipolar,' she says of her juggling act." I was absolutely appalled by Selena's seemingly flippant comment about something as serious as bipolar disorder. Bipolar disorder is a real and serious condition which greatly affects the lives of those who have it, and it's very disheartening to see people toss around the term as though it meant nothing. Plus, the comment was either taken out of context or Selena has very little idea what bipolar disorder actually is: it has pretty much nothing to do with working on many projects, and much more to do with extreme and impairing mood swings. I am very disappointed both in Selena Gomez for making this inappropriate statement and in Teen Vogue for printing it. It saddens me that Selena and Teen Vogue are contributing to the large amount of misconceptions and misinformation about bipolar disorder. As someone who was diagnosed with ADHD, I know what it's like to have a disorder that can often be trivialized. In this article the author, Jane Keltner de Valle, says that Selena is "trying to grow up." If Selena wants to grow up and be respected, she should realize the consequences of her words. In this case I feel she has made herself seem immature by belittling a disorder that is very real and debilitating. Teen Vogue has a young and most likely impressionable audience who may not know better than to copy Selena's inappropriately casual attitude toward bipolar disorder. silivren, you wanna check my grammar? ![]() |

Pooka,
Your letter is excellent. I'm gonna suggest a few slight changes in the name of advocacy, here. This will be along the lines of, "you get more flies with honey..." Dear Teen Vogue I was impressed by Selena's casual comment about something as serious as bipolar disorder. As I'm sure Selena realizes, given her own struggles, bipolar disorder is a real and serious condition that greatly affects the lives of those who have it. It can be very disheartening to see people toss around the term as though it meant nothing, so it was great to see that Selena has overcome her struggles with it. As anyone who has suffered with it knows, this disorder has nothing to do with working on many projects, and everything to do with extreme and impairing mood swings, including deep depression and occasional psychosis. I am glad that Selena Gomez and Teen Vogue opted to highlight this very serious, and debilitating disease. It saddens me whenever I see people contributing to the large amount of misconceptions and misinformation about bipolar disorder. As someone who was diagnosed with ADHD, I know what it's like to have a disorder that can often be trivialized. In this article the author, Jane Keltner de Valle, says that Selena is "trying to grow up." I appreciate those words even more now that I know that Selena is struggling with bipolar disorder, as it means that she necessarily realizes the consequences of her words. In this case I feel she is even more impressive by having highlighted her own personal struggle with a disorder that is very real and debilitating. Teen Vogue has a young and most likely impressionable audience and I am glad that they may be inspired by Selena's personal struggle with bipolar disorder. ![]()

Re: I am p***ed off at Selena Gomez.
Does the magazine have a "Letters to the Editor" section?
One of the first things that came to mind was the Seventeen magazine Photoshop story that was recently in the news. Might be something to think about...
