The Blurt

So... I'm not sure if it's just because I'm more aware of it now or not but... f*#$ me I blurt out some random s#^t sometimes! Usually at work (where I spend all my time), in front of people that are very caring, but don't really need to hear about it!

I know enough of you do it too. Where is the circuit I need to rewire for some change around that impulse? Anyone...? All schematics, manuals, ancient glyphs, spiritual knowings, psychic insights, theories, witticisms, criticisms, cheat codes, hacks, backdoors appreciated.

Feel like I've been a stranger here. Work is nuts! I'm trying to be all to everyone. Including myself these days, which is proving taxing. Who knew I could be such hard work.

Hope you are all having a great weekend.

Re: The Blurt

I don't blurt in public but I do talk out loud to myself when I'm alone sometimes. My boss overheard me once and a year later he admitted he was really concerned about my mental health for awhile.

I do have a tendency to throw in short and curt facts or observations into conversations. I've observed that most people include qualifiers to their statements to provide context and preclude any harmful intent. For me it's like 'Aha, I'm smarter than you, so there!' and I come across as a jerk. If I could give expanded commentary I would but my ADD brain won't let me. Anyway I'm generally a likeable guy so most people write my behaviour off as a personality quirk.

Re: The Blurt

I blurt out weird **** too. Don't feel bad.

I mean, it is not so weird, but its like no one can follow my train of thought but me.

One time, we were driving down the road and i looked at my husband and said, "I want to go to the Alamo some day." He just busted up laughing. It made sense to me. We were listening to the radio and Ozzy came on. Ozzy peed on the Alamo, which made me think of the Alamo. So there you go.

I also just have trouble with blurting out the first thought in my head, like, "I wish we had more trees in the yard", "I can't remember if i ever had anchovies", "I wonder if on some tropical island, dinosaurs still live," or "why do you never see a brown car anymore?"

Sometimes i do it so i dont forget what i was going to say, but sometimes i just do it without thinking. Then people laugh and i either laugh because i realize it sounded funny, or i get mad. LOL

Re: The Blurt

OMG, I feel so stupid. I thought baddad meant office related inappropriate comments like 'Joe is a poopyhead' or something tourrettes like.

Thanks for your examples Joker Girl. I actually do blurt out stuff like that all the time.

Driving down a street I noticed all the houses had white siding then suddenly one was green and I said 'Oh look, a green house!' I assumed my friend was thinking the same thing but he just gave me a very strange look.

ETA: I don't recall ever seeing a brown car. In fact I don't believe any car maker ever gave an option for that colour. Haha, I think most ADD'ers would feel random blurts are good conversation starters.

Re: The Blurt

(sylvie's husband)

I was reading through participants' raw data, and one had listed her monthly cycle as being 44 days.

"FOURTY FOUR DAYS! THAT'S CRAZY LONG!" I blurted out in front of my office mates.

Both of my office mates gasped and clearly thought it was very offensive. I found it hard fathoming why they'd be offended - the participant wasn't there! And I was merely commenting on the fact that there was a surprising statistical outlier, not judging anybody. (So we spent a while arguing, one of my office mates said he hated me and I told him he was a prude... haha.)

The thing is, I think I knew my office mates would respond that way (even though I think their righteousness is misguided) and I blurted it out because I thought it would be interesting to see what happened.

Re: The Blurt

I'm a frequent blurter, too.

Haven't found a way to avoid doing it, but as you mentioned, I seem more aware.

Depending on the setting and the company, there's a fine line between it being entertaining or embarassing.

At times, in the company of my peers, my random blurts have led to awesome discoveries and discussions.

I think I've become much less concerned about other people's reactions vs. trying to mute myself.

Re: The Blurt

I do it too, quite a bit. Thought I was the only one! Fortunately my co workers don't seem to care that I do it, because I try to make them laugh all the time. I always have a joke, and they seem to enjoy that. But yeah, sometimes I blurt out things that have nothing to do with the previous sentence.

You have a brown ford exploder! Come to think of it I have seen brown pick-ups and suv's. So there probably is a brown car somewhere. I stand corrected.

Hilarious typo!!!

Hey thanks all for the stories. It is nice to know I am not the only one who does this. I guess sometimes it does take the conversation down some interesting roads. That's a nice "glass half full" way of looking at it, unmanageable.

I'm buying the duct tape.

This reminds me of one time I was early in class one morning and thinking about how funny the word theory sounds in an indian accent. Then I thought, what would it sound like in a Spanish accent when hispanic foreigners pronounce the "r" as if it were a "d". Can you guess what I blurted out? [hint, I left out the "o" in "theory"]. Yes, I got weird looks!

Although usually when I blurt things out, it's when I interrupt someone because I was thinking of some random play on words or something clever in general

Re: The Blurt

join the club, that was the main thing that made my parents think i had tourette's when i was little (which i never had). i say stupid and random things all the time for no apparent reason, but it's not due to a biological 'tick', i just do.
