Do you have family members who share your disorder?
I've been thinking about it more and it's occurred to me that none of my nuclear or extended family share my symptoms. No one in my family has an ADHD diagnosis except for me. While that's not so unusual in and of itself, what is strange to me is that I can't identify with anyone symptom wise. I suspect a couple of my uncles might be ADHD-C but I haven't spent enough time around them to be sure. One of them is on the run from the law as a fugitive because of his impulsiveness and fiscal irresponsibility. But even if they were I don't share their compulsiveness.
Theoretically, if SCT is its own disorder then it leads me to wonder about its etiology. Could it be a mutation of ADHD? Maybe it's not heritable like ADHD and it's just a birth defect? However you define your disorder, what do you notice in your family? Are your symptoms very similar or is there a wide range of severity? |

Re: Do you have family members who share your disorder?
(sylvie's husband, as always) I think so (but most of us, including me, aren't diagnosed).
I'm 99.9% sure my half-brother (my mother's side) has asperger's or autism. (Constant stimming, extreme social awkwardness, exploring objects with his hands, special interests - for him it's science fiction, fantasy, and roleplaying games - interests I definitely share with him. I'd go so far as to say I'm about the only person in the family that 'gets' him) One of my other half-brothers, on that side, has some ADHD traits, but, if the screening tools are anything to go by, he probably doesn't have the full disorder. He has a lot of trouble focusing on his work, but that's about it. No social difficulties, problems with money, or anything else. My cousin's (mother's side) son is diagnosed with Asperger's. I think my Dad suffers from ADHD. Although he's an accomplished mathematical physicist, he has definitely suffered from problems revolving around impulsivity throughout his life, and I actually went through the symptoms of ADHD with him over Skype the other day - he clearly thought they fit him to a tee. He made a career-changing discovery early in his career and dithered/procrastinated until his colleagues harangued him into getting it published (they'd had to make do, citing him without having an actual published article to cite, for quite some time - not sure exactly how long though). |

Re: Do you have family members who share your disorder?
Only the one in denial. My mother has worse untreated symptoms than me. Even when I gave her some Ritalin (it was either that or a shotgun to my own head) she still thinks there's nothing wrong with her, yet her life is continually going to s***.
I think my nephew has some ADHD/AS traits. My niece could be an gifted/AS type. Lucky bugger. My half sister has Bipolar and OCD. And my dad, I blame him for my autism. I wish he was still alive so we could be awesome together and talk about medicine at length, and draw and take photos. And now I cry. Birth defect? Haven't heard that word in awhile. I wish I knew more about genetics so I knew how they affected what we will be like. Brain is failing to put it into a more eloquent way. In the autism forums there's been some talk about SCT and adrenal fatigue. Although I'm much into adrenal fatigue. But I guess I'm just saying you're not alone.

Re: Do you have family members who share your disorder?
My teenaged daughter and my father both have ADHD, both are diagnosed, neither take meds.
My father, who's in his seventies, was particularly comforted to discover that his life struggling with absentmindedness and forests of post-it notes had an explanation. He looked into medication, but said he was advised that they would put additional strain on his heart. I have to say, though, that his demeanor seems a bit more relaxed since he found out.

Re: Do you have family members who share your disorder?
In my family I can think of a dozen relatives who would easily meet the C diagnosis. My wife's family is very different. Although My wife and her sister are the only ones to show inattentive symptoms, four of the five other siblings show marked
hyperactivity. Two uncles and a grandmother were/are the same. |

Re: Do you have family members who share your disorder?
im sure i do but trying to tell them this or holding up a mirrior in their faces, or asking them to look at my life in shambles justs me a pat on the head.. "oh sarah...youre just your own kind of person"
They are blind! So we argue and sometimes agree, but then the stigmas enter the room and all bets are off. In those circumstances I tell them all to f**k themsleves and on the way out say: see? that was impulsivie.

Re: Do you have family members who share your disorder?
My youngest son, 13 years old though has not been diagnosed shows all of the symptoms, some worse than mine. His non diagnosis is my fault, when I took myself off of all meds around 2002 I refused to take him to the doc because that was "behind us" and we were "above that" now that I have crashed and am on meds and being way more productive I will have to rethink that decision.

Re: Do you have family members who share your disorder?
I have several cousins and their children who have either ADHD or Autism.
My sister most likely has ADHD (and OCD) but hasn't been diagnosed for it. My daughter claims she doesn't have ADHD, that it's just stress that makes her so forgetful. She has two daughters (my grandkids), one has ADHD and one has Autism. Yeah, strong family history.

Re: Do you have family members who share your disorder?
My mother has severe ADHD but none of my brothers or sisters would ever consider seeing a pdoc about it. I am the youngest of 5. I suspect 1 of my brothers has it, but he hates the world and all of society, so he won't listen to anyone. sigh... I talked to one of my sisters and my other brother and they both feel like they have symptoms (I agree) but not enough to seek treatment.
My moms side of the family is rapant with ADHD and depression.

Re: Do you have family members who share your disorder?
My father has ADHD with symptoms much like mine....I can actually look at my family and pretty clearly identify bits and pieces of all my disorders...no real mysteries there.
