Have you ever met anyone with ADHD?

I've always been curious what it would be like to talk to someone who also has ADHD. What has been your experience with other adders?

Re: Have you ever met anyone with ADHD?

I've known people in real life who I'm almost entirely sure have ADHD or SCT. But never one that has either been diagnosed (or maybe they were and didn't bring it up)

I LOVE PHARMACOLOGY! It's interesting learning how eating a chemical can cure diseases, change how you feel/think. I've read countless books, articles, research essays, and etc. on it. If you have an interest in it too or want to have a discussion about it, I'm open to it.

Re: Have you ever met anyone with ADHD?

Acey, I have met several people in my life with ADD/HD.

Because I am sensitive to the effects, I quickly recognize the rapid changes in subject, the dropped sentences, the drifting attention. With some people, I can help refocus them back to the conversation, with others I have to let go and be silent as they carry on a one-sided conversation. It can be frustrating.

If I am tired or over-excited, my train of thought can go awry and confuse people. Sometimes, it's hard for me to catch myself before they start getting strange looks on their faces.

Re: Have you ever met anyone with ADHD?

My dad has undiagnosed ADHD and his hyperactivity drives me nuts: since I'm PI our ADD traits are kind of opposite. He often trails off mid-sentence as his brain moves on to a different topic, leaving me hanging and extremely impatient.
One of my friends has ADHD (not sure what type) but we get along marvelously. Having a conversation with another ADDer is a lot of fun but anyone within hearing distance probably thinks you're both absolutely insane. Our conversations get really random and nonsensical.

My wife and I have been together for over twenty years and only recently found out we both have ADD. We always wondered why we are such kindred spirits

Re: Have you ever met anyone with ADHD?

Two people (other than my Dad who I suspect but is not diagnosed).

A friend from school, when I was about 12. He was extremely hyperactive and bigger than most of the other kids. Everybody knew that he had ADHD, and he was not popular at all. The day I met him (the first day of school at a new school), I was doing some kind of class activity outside with him and this other kid. The other kid said something like "don't be his friend, he's a loser and noone likes him" right in front of us both. I was like "screw that" and decided to befriend him right then :P Gotta love those ODD tendencies eh? The guy was a bit unpredictable, but he was a decent enough chap. I ended up moving away though.

The other person I knew was also extremely hyperactive. We were looking for a flatmate, when I was about 20. This guy was a year or two younger. He had decided to stop taking his meds, and was actually selling them (!) I WISH I had taken him up on his offer of trying some. I might have learned something about myself. But I didn't.

Unfortunately, things didn't work out with him. His behaviour was absolutely unacceptable. He'd invite friends round at all hours of the night, while we were asleep, and turn up the music really loud. We'd (the rest of the people living at the flat) be sitting quietly in the lounge, watching Lord of the Rings or something, and he'd come home drunk, open the door and yell "I'M SO F***** DRUNK! HURRRRRRRRRRRR"

Things got super tense, and we caught wind of the fact that he'd been bragging to friends that he was planning on just moving out without giving us notice (he also owed us rent/phone money). It ended with me brandishing a weapon (I have a real forged sword, it was one of my impulse purchases while an undergrad) at him, to deter him from stealing anything from us while he moved his crap out. Yeah... that one didn't turn out so well.

It's kinda weird that 10 years on, I suspect that I have ADHD. I'm certainly quite different from either of the two people with confirmed ADHD that I've met. Then again, I'm very similar to my Dad, and I suspect he has it.

A boy aged 2, 3, 10 and 13.

My friend is diagnosed with it too. She is a bipolar/ADHD hybrid interspersed with shades of awesome!

Oh and my in denial mother.

1. Bipolar/ADHD. If she's bipolar I then mania + ADHD hyperactive-impulsive traits together must be insane.

2. You have a denial ridden mother too? I haven't talked to mine in years, but my entire life she refused to believe I had any kind of mental disorder and just thought I was a bad kid and eventually after lots and lots of beatings I'd wise up and become normal.

Oh, she was. She didn't tell me at first. And alcohol and all those painkillers she's on for back pain just made it worse.

My mum is more in denial about her own ADHD. I don't really care what she thinks about me. She's ok with it, then she's not. I would like for her to either believe me or not and stick with it.

Re: Have you ever met anyone with ADHD?

My best friend and his little sister. About ten people on my school. A friend, some of his friends and his father in the Netherlands I went to Wacken 2010 with. Some teens at the former day hospital. People I met travelling. One of my former bosses. An ex of an ex of mine. Bunch of friends I met in Bournemouth and I'm forgetting half...

btw - I love them. They were very memorable. Very interesting, so unique, so much to tell.
