Potential problem with getting diagnosed

So I'm having an appointment coming up to check my ADHD. I fit basically every symptom for inattentive. There is one issue, however. Since the beginning of high school for me in Grade 9 (I'm going into Grade 12 this year), I have been photoshopping my report card every semester because my difficulty in school caused me to stay constantly grounded. To this day they have no idea how badly I'm doing in school, and I intend to keep it that way. During the diagnosis would it be possible for whoever I am having the appointment with to keep my situation private? Would it be possible for my parents simply continue not knowing about it?

For the record, I am going to stop giving fake grades to my parents this year. In Canada, this year is the most crucial so bad grades in the rest of high school would not hurt me like in the US. Also to give you an idea I give my parents marks in the 80-90 range and they still express disappointment, in reality I'm getting mostly 60s and low 70s.

D'oh! Now if you tell the pdoc, they'll wonder whether they can trust the "true" report cards that you show them! Any way you can prove that they're the real ones and you're not just faking those?

I didn't photoshop my report cards, didn't have the programs for it. However, report cards ARE the reason why I know how to jimmy open a mailbox with a nail file and a bobby pin. I used to run home on my lunch breaks when I knew a report card was coming, jimmy open the lock, and run back to school.

I think photoshopping your report card will get you on the fast track to diagnosis.

Re: Potential problem with getting diagnosed

Yeah, I'll echo everyone else on the fact it might just earn you points towards a diagnosis. Maybe it's just here, but for something like that, if the parent isn't in the room, often a pdoc would probably either be amused or lightly reprimanding for that, but wouldn't tell a parent. Technically it's not illegal and it's not endangering your welfare all that much. It really depends on your area. If you're really concerned, you can look up adolescent confidentiality in therapy/treatment as related to your area.

Re: Potential problem with getting diagnosed

well photoshopping your report cards shows that you have had so many problems in school. I would tell your doctor. I know here in America even if your still a minor and you see a shrink privately they can't tell your parents anything that you tell them not too. Unless its like a life or death situation. I think you'd be better off telling your doctor atleast. Because that's a major sign of ADHD! Good job on getting tested for it though. I think if you get diagnosed with it. You should be honest to your school. Take advantage of the help. I didn't get diagnosed until three days ago. I'm 30 now. I wish I would have found out I had it when I was younger. I think I would be in a far off better situation than I am now. You should be glad you have parent's that care. Mine never even bothered with me.

Re: Potential problem with getting diagnosed

I did the exact same thing bud, photoshop & all. They always find out - even if it's four weeks before graduation, and you think it's the end of the world . . . it's not & I am so glad I have parents who love me so much I taught myself photoshop! Anywho - tell the doc everything, they don't share your stories unless you're in danger or dangerous.

And if it's saves you any time in choosing a successful career in the future - something Creative like Design, you might do well

Thank you everyone, I'm glad that the doctor telling my parents about it won't be necessary.
