Hahaha, I'm having my funniest and yet dumbest argument about ADHD ever.
Them: "ADHD is an incredibly mild disorder even in it's most severe form. Sure, you may not have enough dopamine, but it should make you feel a lot better knowing you don't have something like severe [cognitive impairment] or quadraplegia?"
Me: No, that doesn't make me feel better, because the fact other people have it worse than me doesn't make my ADHD any easier to deal with. Them: No but you should be thankful that you don't have something as severe as that. What if you graduated high school in the early 70s and got shipped straight to vietnam and had your arms and legs blown off the first day, suffered terminal brain damage, and had to be a vegetable with a feeding tube forever? Me: That would suck, but that is not my reality, this is. I feel bad for people like that, but simply doesn't change my opinion that my ADHD has caused me a great deal of misery and problems and you can't seem to get it through your head that thinking that "it could be worse" doesn't ever improve the person's current situation. Them: You don't feel bad for them, you have no compassion for people with actual diseases that prevent you from living a full life obviousy, because you're too busy worrying about the fact you have the same problems everyone else has, only a little bit worse, if that. I procrastinate sometimes, I sometimes can't focus on a task, and sometimes I feel unmotivated. Only difference is between us is you need to take big pharma's answer to crystal meth to get over it while I just accept it because that's life. Me: Okay. You, a 21 year old who lives with his parents and has never even had a job, obviously are on to something, that many years of scientific research were botched and people with ADHD are just a club of lazy people who want free meth to be able to slide through life easier. Them: Would not be surprised in the least if it were all a big, intricate scam. Me: Thank you for opening my eyes, I must go now. I'm going to the hospital to tell the people in there that their situation could indeed be worse. That should make their current disease seem so insignificant because hey, terminal cancer sucks but knowing other people never had the chance to live life long enough to get terminal cancer should make them content and happy. Thank you, Generic Immature 21 year old #3203958. You have discovered not only the big scandal to get people hooked on pills that are exactly like crystal meth in every way, but also the way to make the entire world happy and content with their situation, whatever it may be. I am not worthy of your presence, and I need to run to the pharmacy to get more crank. Bye. *leaves* (The last two things I said were sarcastic) The above were all written exactly as they were said, no exaggeration or anything despite the fact it's rare to see someone that narrow minded. It felt similar to how arguing with a priest about whether God exists would feel. Hopefully this makes you all feel better about your ADHD knowing someone has to live life being as idiotic as he is. *eyeroll* EDIT: I don't know why I put "i'm having" instead of "I had."

Re: Hahaha, I'm having my funniest and yet dumbest argument about ADHD ever.
I hear people talk like this a lot, fortunately not to my face or they won't have much of one left when I'm done with them.
It sucks but the best thing to get out of it is that they know less about something than you do. Hmm, maybe you can twist their words and try to make it sound like having ADHD is better than not. Even if you don't really believe it. I just say people who have a physical disability or even or mental disability are usually more socially aware than me. I still have that loneliness that comes with not being able to relate to people. I've known people with Down's syndrome more socially successful than me. If people keep throwing the same rhetoric at me I'll throw in the severe sensory processing disorder, completely incapacitated by the outside world without medication, dark sunglasses and ear plugs, card at them. Then they say you're full of self pity even though all you want to do is win an argument. You can never win.

Re: Hahaha, I'm having my funniest and yet dumbest argument about ADHD ever.
If only there was something that caused a late-onset ADHD, so a person can remember what it's like being "normal" and compare it to ADHD, haha.
Another sucky thing is how ADHD really doesn't have any big, stand-out symptoms. All of them sound minor on their own, its the fact that people will only let you get one or two out before interrupting you with "WELL THATS NOT SUCH A BIG DEAL". On it's own it isn't but it sure as hell is when accompanied by MANY, MANY more. It's like explaining what having cancer is like by listing the symptoms, and only getting past rapid weight loss and loss of appetite before the person says OH WELL CANCER MUST NOT BE THAT BAD HURR

Re: Hahaha, I'm having my funniest and yet dumbest argument about ADHD ever.
There are some people that don't think dyslexia is real. That's when I realised no matter what you say some people can't be convinced.
People just like to complain and let everyone know their poorly thought out, no sources to back up, opinion that they picked up from someone else, because they like the sound of the voice or think everyone ought to know this hidden wisdom. I hardly talk to people about it outside of this forum because they're just no that smart.

Send them to Daniel Amen's website.
Read teh part about spec imaging. They actually take a picture of the brain to show that the frontal lobes have "holes" in the activity part with adhd people and that meds fix those holes. Last edited by tazoz; 08-27-12 at 04:54 AM.. Reason: Removed commercial link |

Tim Minchin is such a legend. Was in Melbourne new year's 2011 and narrowly missed seeing him in concert. Was so bummed. On the plus side, Radiohead in November, wheee! [/derail ]

To think I loved Tim Minchin before.
Now I want to marry him.

Like a sniper using bollocks for ammunition.
I caught Derren Brown interviewing Tim Minchin on BBC radio 4 extra, the other day. Was pretty interesting. Either of those 2 would be near the top of my "if you could have coffee with anybody, who would it be?" list.

I was hanging out with my friend and that's his brother. That's also the only reason he didn't get a swift punch to the jaw.

Yeah, the typical "I have it worse than you" or even the "it could be worse" isn't really a nice thing to say... but hey, people say the darnedest things sometimes.
