Countless hours wasted editing things over and over

I tend to edit posts over and over because I'm always finding mistakes. It's probably because I rush through things to get it over with, but I end up wasting way more time than if I had looked over it before posting it. I often try to avoid having to write a long post.

It's sort of funny how I will be so confident to post something. Then after posting, I'm like.. dang it! ...then after countless edits, I'm thinking.. one more time! ... [edits like 10 more times]. This is especially annoying when it comes to video editing.

Re: Countless hours wasted editing things over and over

I do it frequently on here and with school.

What is funny to me is I ALWAYS look back and I don't think I properly conveyed what I wanted to convey.

It will sound all wrong and if I perceive it wrong, god knows what others think of it.

Sometimes I'l edit edit edit...

Other times, I say screw it..

Re: Countless hours wasted editing things over and over

This is why often my new threads don't come off very good...

I spend so much time editing and making it appealing for readers, I so badly want people to react I can choose wrong words and bad titles and my worst fear comes true, ironic, isn't it ?

In this case, you succeeded, I take my hat of to you (quick, gimme a hat!)

That has happened to me here too.
I had a post about some not so well known medication for urinary retention called Bethanechol and I suggested that it seems to help with difficulty urinating when taking Ritalin..

I guess people were thinking.. ooh. okay.. o.O
LOL, look still no reply.. apparently nobody could relate because they may have never heard of what I'm talking about

Re: Countless hours wasted editing things over and over

I am a terrible proofreader and tend to make a lot of mistakes. I find that just about the only way I can manage is to write off line. That way I can do a spell check and a grammar check if needed.

Even then I often find errors after posting usually after the edit time is passed. I just live with it and hope I don't embarrass myself too much.

Re: Countless hours wasted editing things over and over

I do that when posting in forums and a lot at work when sending email's to anyone, co-workers or management. Sometimes I find mistakes and fix them but most of the time its just to check if what I typed though it makes sense to me will make sense to other people that read it.... There have been times I when I have read a post or email over 10 times or more before i send it.

It's funny how my random research on disorders has led me to OCD and compulsive checking.. lolz

There's even already a post about compulsive checking relating to constantly checking posts.. how, it's like we're all speaking the same language.. no wait, we are... lolz

Re: Countless hours wasted editing things over and over

Yeah, I do the same thing. Occasionally I look back on a previous post of mine and go "wow, that's not even a proper sentence." I think occasionally I edit so aggressively that my sentences lose their grammatical structure.

I just type and hit reply. The only editing I really do is if my words have red lines for misspellings.

Re: Countless hours wasted editing things over and over

I do that sometimes. Most times I re-read it a thousand times, add some more to it, re-read it another thousand times.

An hour later while I'm clicking between browser tabs 'oh, I forgot to press send.'

Re: Countless hours wasted editing things over and over

I love editing and re-arranging and re-casting sentences, which is why I generally avoid it in forums. I'll just keep revising endlessly.

I also shy away from new posts for the reasons mentioned above ... I too love people to react, but I'll "craft" a thing into oblivion. That and my ideas often seem a bit "out there" even for this crowd.

Re: Countless hours wasted editing things over and over

Hi Rocky:

I think it is normal to write out what you want to say and then review it.

I do not know where the line is between sufficient editing or excessive editing. I edit alot but I think I learn something each time I edit.

But, sometimes, you do need to just let go, meaning everything we write does not have to be perfect, posts are a means to communicate thoughts and ideas, so which is more important getting your thoughts out or creating perfection?

Of course, but if one means no replies, and the other one does, rather make a compromise perhaps ?
