Portraits & a Self-Portrait

.....Just after I got out of school, I was invited to be a part of a show called "Women Photograph Women" .....so off I went...I used that 2475 big grain film I spoke of, as it is simply the best for portraits ....there were 12 in all, these are the ones I have left .....

My friend Linda .....I love this shot to pieces .....it was taken just before we went out to shoot her portrait....this is the one I used......





...and this is Wendy.....we were up to nefarious doings when I took this ........but I love the lighting on this one .......





...this is Barbara, ...my first successfull attempt at Rembrant lighting.....I was so jazzed.....notice the light all along one side of her face, and then the triangle of light under her eye....that, my friends is Rembrant lighting .....





....Here we have Wendy ( a different one) and Polly, best friends since kindergarden .....the shot is slightly out of focus, but I love it anyway .....




...This is 2 sisters, Kathy and Michele, they are wearing dresses that I made, ( they were dancing dresses) ....and it is a handcolored photo, using Marshall photo oils, on a B & W photograph......




and finally, I shot this self-portrait in a teeny tiny town called Elk, one wild week-end ....about 25 of us had gone out to that town ( on the Mendicino coast) because our friends in a band ...Tommy Thomsen and the Sonoma County Line ( pop. 5 elev: pretty high) were playing in a bar there for 2 nights.....the people who owned the bar, also had a 2 story house they let us use for the weekend, so we piled in a bunch of cars and headed out...went through 3 blenders making Margaritas ! .....

....talk about glory days ....yah, we had 'em ......


...The portrait was taken using a derelict buildings glass door, that's my reflection....I was 27 at the time

Oh Salleh!!! What wonderful photos!! I love B/W! I couldn't decide which one I liked best,then I realized each one is special in its own way!

Well,there is one I like best...the photo of your reflection in the glass. PERFECT!

I'm sure I've lost all my B/W photos,but I believe I have the negative of almost every photo I took. I have a huge manila envelope full of them,maybe one day I'll go through them and have some developed.

Yah those were wonderous days ......it's having those memories that enabled me to get through my worst times ....few people were as lucky as I to have the place, the school, the music ( those photos are yet to come) the friends ......

......I was inspired to see if Barbara was on facebook, and she was ..so I dropped her a note this morning ....and looking through her friends....Linda was listed ....and a couple of others I knew in the old days .....John looks fabulous .....even better looking than he was in his youth .....a very Greek looking fellow, hooked nose and a shock of wild black hair ....it's all gone silver now, but he still has most of it ! .....

.....Can't wait to hear from her .....it's too bad I bought watches instead of that cheap car I wanted...I'd drive up to Sonoma today ! .....

Thanks again guys .....and I did hear from Barbara.....we will be getting together when I get back to California .....along with a good friend of ours who has moved from Sonoma to Berkeley .....so she has been a neighbor of mine the whole time I have been in Emeryville, and I didn't know it !....


...and I still take photos ....mostly landscapes these days .....

but weren't we a pretty group of girls ?? .....

what most people don't realize when they're young is that youth really is beauty .....and when you have someone good at the camera .....they will bring it out .....


It does get much harder as we get older !
