Restlessness?

I feel restless a lot. Cannot seem to enjoy anything for too long. If there isn't variety, I can become bored quickly. I have incredibly difficulty relaxing and hanging out by myself. Unfortunately, where I live is not conducive to meeting people. I was recently diagnosed with ADHD and have had depression for quite some time. I also just started taking meds for the ADHD and they are helping to an extent. I just always still feel a bit restless...like nothing I do is satisfying or enough. I want to get into some new hobbies, but I can't seem to find any that don't bore me or don't seem insurmountable to learn.

Are you restless? How do you cope with your restlessness?

Re: Restlessness?

Yes, I'm restless and get bored very easily. Try fitting in some daily exercise. When I feel like that, 10-15 min brisk walk or lifting weights usually helps to clear my mind. I also started taking ashwagandha 7% powder which is an Indian herb, adaptogen. Helps the body to balance itself and it works wonders to calm me down and helping me focus.

Re: Restlessness?

I can totally relate to feeling restless, especially with the fact that I had a sheltered life and still live dependent on my dad.
It can be literally depressing, but with the help of meds I was able to cope better and actually have the motivation to be more productive.

Re: Restlessness?

Get lots of exercise man. I have found that is one of the only things that keeps me calm and staves off some of the restlesness. Meds were alright but I found there were too many side effects and they eventually wear off and then you end up with worse ADHD for a period of time until you take them again. I hear you 100%. It is really annoying, especially when everyone else in a group seems to be really into _______ and you try it and like 15 minutes later you are like, ok who wants to go somewhere else/do something else? Or you just hold that thought inside because you know if you verbalize it you risk ******* everyone in the group off.

Re: Restlessness?

I think physical exercise helps. I hate the feeling of restleness/anxiety/nervousness (are they the same thing). When I feel like this I tend to drink coffee and smoke, which makes me even worse.

If I´m not doing anything I feel in a constant state of "waiting for something to happen" and of course it never does.

Maybe I should do an adrenalin job, like an ambulance driver or something!!

Re: Restlessness?

Oh yeah, extremely restless. It sucks. I've got a thousand hobbies and I can't seem to finish any of them.

I'm going to start exercising a lot more; I find that hobbies where I need to really exert myself physically do keep me grounded.

Re: Restlessness?

Yes. Extremely. I was thinking about this last night. My son and I were watching an extremely funny stand up comedian on television, and after about 10 minutes I was starting to want to get up and do something else. But the guy was really funny and I wasn't bored with him, just restless to do something else. It's like my mind can't just stay in one place and immerse itself in the situation. I didn't have to do anything else. Nothing was on the stove and burning over. I just had this overwhelming urge to move on to something else.

Re: Restlessness?

When I get restless, I tend to clean. The reason being that I can always find something to clean or reorganize, and if I just try to keep doing whatever it was that made me restless, I will drive myself and my boyfriend absolutely crazy. He's not nearly as restless and hyper as me and he doesn't know how to deal with me a lot of the time.

That might not necessarily work for you, but you should try to at least find something active to do. That way, if you do it long enough, you'll at least tire yourself out and calm down.

Re: Restlessness?

I am with you as well OP. It drives my girlfriend crazy, I can rarely sit through a TV show let alone a movie. My brain is constantly in other places, even when I appear to be in the here and now my brain is off on it's own path. Sometimes it feels like my brain is working overtime and I can't get my body to work half time . I know that excersize helps concentrate the mind and can burn that excess energy, but it rarely translates to action. Meds were a miracle for me but only for a short time, ever since they haven't been able to find something that works. I will have to make a greater resolve to excersize, they just put me back on my wellbutrin and Vyvance so maybe that will help.
