Stuttering?

In the past two months, I have had some issues with stuttering. I don't stutter often, and honestly have only done it about three or four times. However, I wonder what is causing it, and whether anyone else has dealt with occasional sudden stuttering.

In my case, as I'm speaking I'll repeat a word twice in a sentence without meaning to, i.e. - "I think I'll go outside-side for a minute". It's pretty disturbing to me... though I read that it can be caused by stress and I've got my fair share.

Any thoughts anyone? Thanks!!

Re: Stuttering?

I agree! It's most likely stress.

I've been experiencing the same issue.
I figure, don't worry about it unless it settles in long-term.

I LOVE PHARMACOLOGY! It's interesting learning how eating a chemical can cure diseases, change how you feel/think. I've read countless books, articles, research essays, and etc. on it. If you have an interest in it too or want to have a discussion about it, I'm open to it.

Re: Stuttering?

I've always mixed my words or syllables up when speaking, unfortunately I rarely notice unless someone tells me. People are too polite to point it out and just roll with it.

In high school I had a teacher Mr. Kettles that I always called "Mistle Ketters", and never realized it until a friend asked why I always called him that. He just let me call him that for almost 2 years.

Or I'd call hot water "Wot hotter". My latest is "Channum Tating".

I'm not even getting into just mixing words up, I'll be thinking of lazer tag and accidentally call it paint balling.

I don't do it enough for it to be considered a speech impediment, but it does happen once in a while. It comes out more during any extreme emotion: happiness, anxiety, anger, etc. Most it just comes out when I'm anxious or stressed.

Whether or not it's "normal" for add I dunno.

Re: Stuttering?

My mother bought me near a hundred dollars worth of self-books, and said I would save money reading them. I told her I wasn't capable of "cogidid behavior therapy" for myself. She then suggest speech therapy.

Re: Stuttering?

I do that too, sometimes I lose myself in mid-sentence and then it ends up making no sense. This even happens at times when writing, but of course, I can just edit it out. I sort of discovered this problem when I attempted to do a vlog on youtube... epic fail.. I decided not to bother.

Re: Stuttering?

I'm sure it's just something to do with nerves or stress. If you haven't experienced any major brain trauma lately then I highly doubt that it will continue to be a problem for you long-term! I had some speech issues when I was younger, mostly a lisp and problems sounding certain letters (R's and T's mostly). I don't think you can really tell anymore except when I am tired I know the lisp becomes more pronounced.

The funny thing is that I still lisp pretty heavily when I speak Spanish, or any foreign language that is not my native language (English). It's not a castellano lisp, because my family is from South America, not Spain. When I speak German or Chinese, I lisp in those languages, too. I think it's just something about the way the brain works, I don't speak those languages nearly enough to "train" myself out of lisping the way I did with English. Very peculiar.

Re: Stuttering?

I stuttered ever since I was a kid. It stopped for a while and then now it is resurfacing again really badly and I don't know what is causing it. I think stress causes it, not sure though.

Re: Stuttering?

I understand what I do is not stuttering in it's most severe form. My concern is that though I am not trying at all, I'm repeating words or part of words. And I'm pretty sure it's stress also, but wondered if anyone else ever dealt with the same.

I sometimes also say words that I am not even thinking... say, I'll ask one of my boys to throw some clothes in the trash, instead of in the laundry. Mostly I just laugh at that. But the repeating thing jsut got to me last week...

Re: Stuttering?

I don't really stutter but I often misspeak and get kinda tongue tied. A lot of my sentences are followed by someone tentatively correcting me and then me going, "Yeah, yeah, that's what I meant!"
