When my symptoms are under control, other peoples' ADD behavior bothers me

When, either through exercise/meds/etc, my symptoms are under control and I'm feeling pretty "NT", other peoples' ADD behavior suddenly really offends me. It makes me feel like a total hypocrite.

For example, when I'm in this rare, neurotypical mindset and a friend is forgetful, flaky, disorganized, etc... I'll get all judgmental and think "Well jeez they could have done this and this to make sure that didn't happen". I have to stop and really think about how I'm the exact same way sometimes to calm myself down. How ****ty of me right? It's like I'm abandoning my "people", but it's a total kneejerk reaction.

Anyone else like this? I kinda feel like a d-bag.

Re: When my symptoms are under control, other peoples' ADD behavior bothers me

It bugs me if they're NT and spacing on me when I talk because I know they're actually capable of listening. But if they are consistently spacey/forgetful then it doesn't bug me.

Most times it's just fun to watch from the outside looking in. It kind of makes me wonder if that's how I look to most people off the meds. Then I feel a bit weird like I'm observing my friends like a scientist instead of just hanging with them.

Re: When my symptoms are under control, other peoples' ADD behavior bothers me

yes, but if I think about it enough, it's the symptoms that I don't generally possess anyway that are bugging me. I just am more aware of it when my meds are working.

Hmmmmmmm....... I can relate, I have similar feelings regarding other things.

I think it's got something to do with fear that you will "let in" or relapse and adopt those behaviours.

Acknowledge your feeling within then find a way to reason/defer/channel your energies elsewhere before you get too worked up.

Re: When my symptoms are under control, other peoples' ADD behavior bothers me

I'm the same way.

I think it's got more to do with seeing your old self in them. My mother would struggle with some issues I'd overcome. Or things I'd just watch out for, and it irritated me that she wasn't aware or knew how to deal with them.

Re: When my symptoms are under control, other peoples' ADD behavior bothers me

When I was untreated, my adhd symptoms annoyed my bf (who is also adhd) so much, and it would upset me because I thought if anyone could understand and be tolerant, it would be him.

He told me it annoyed him because it's frustrating to see when you know the person could be doing better and not struggling and suffering. Also because it was hard to have reminder of how bad it was without treatment. I think he wanted to put as much distance between himself and how he was as he could.

I didn't understand- I loved having someone else with the same difficulties around.

Now that I am medicated, my boyfriend's adhd traits do annoy me sometimes! Probably because I feel that I now have no excuse for my own, and am too harsh on myself to tolerate the same in others. I have to remember meds and change don't equal a miracle cure; they stop me from being in adhd hell 24/7 so that my problem areas are just that, and not spilling over and through my entire life.

I can tackle them now. I hope!

But yes, I feel the same sometimes, and feel like a hypocrite, or that I'm not being fair. When it happens, I tell myself to check myself, take a min, and cut it out or at least keep it to myself if it's just petty. At least, I try to!

xxBB

Re: When my symptoms are under control, other peoples' ADD behavior bothers me

The closest thing I can relate to this is suddenly thinking that certain youtubers weren't that funny anymore... it's like the meds took away alot of my sense of humor.
Although sometimes when I do meet people, I'm thinking "dude, that kid needs Ritalin".

Re: When my symptoms are under control, other peoples' ADD behavior bothers me

Yep, I find them annoying too. That actually helped me spot a friend who probably has it though, so he's working on getting evaluated soon.

I think it is the fact that we see it in others and know it could be better. I only have one other friend with ADHD, and it makes me crazy that he won't even consider getting medicated, knowing how much better his life could be.

NT's don't really bother me though, it's only people who I know could be helped by treatment.

Re: When my symptoms are under control, other peoples' ADD behavior bothers me

actually when im on Adderall (or 'under control' like you said with exercising) i noticed im not so much bothered by other people's possible/or not ADD behaviors, im just more easily irritated in generally. i think it's gotten easier in college when my classes arent or 8 hours a day in a row and i have time to use my medicated-ness/NT-ness for good use like studying and getting stuff done and whatnot, but yeah. im just easily irritated, im curious what side-effect that is specifically

Hmm. Interesting. I'm glad other people feel the same way and it's not just me.

It makes me wonder though if being more "NT" is really worth losing that carefree attitude that sometimes comes along with being ADHD.

Neuroscience and psychology for me.
I'm just this massive ball of empathy now.

Someone once said that people need to grow a thicker skin.

My illogical meter went crazy.

Then I went into personality types, genes, epigentics and the impossibility of growing a thicker layer of skin.

Trolls hate me. I don't explode at them. I go extremely rational and into giving them the longest most detailed scientific description mode.

And then I lose interest.

And yes, I am more understand of my mother now. So much that I want to punch out my siblings for ever saying a bad word against her. Metaphorically speaking, of course.

Carefree? I'm like a ticking time bomb because of my ADHD. If I had more patience with people it'b ok.
