Reminders - I GIVE UP!!!

After reading a thread about organisation etc I decided to use Google calender with email reminders which go both to my computer and mobile.

I was so proud of myself and last week was great. However I find that as soon as I see the words "Google Calendar Reminder" my brain switches off and I find myself not reading them. Sometimes I just think I know what the reminder says (when in fact I don´t).

Is this the end of the line for me - at least I´m laughing about it.

I feel your pain.

Re: Reminders - I GIVE UP!!!

Are you referring to that phenomenon where you just could have just read an entire paragraph then realize you didn't actually read it and just looked at it a few seconds later?

Re: Reminders - I GIVE UP!!!

Reminders don't work for me. However, writing a to-do list does. Once it's written down I just do it. I think it's less interfering if I can check it myself.

Re: Reminders - I GIVE UP!!!

I've tried so many things, reminders, to do lists, alarms on my mobile, etc. etc.

Some things work but never for long. Never long enough to actually accomplish anything. Once the novelty of a new method wears off I'm back to square one. (And I always lose my to do lists. I've started making e-lists but then I just forget to check them. Or I check them and decide that I don't want to do any of the things on my list. )

My brain seems to switch off too the moment I need to do something. I just snooze or dismiss reminders. Or like you, I think, I know assume that I know what they say but usually still forget something vital.

Congratulations, you just figured out why reminders usually don't work for ADHD people!

Re: Reminders - I GIVE UP!!!

Geno, I see the reminder and either think that I already know what it says or don´t actually read past the words "Google Reminder" because mm...... no idea why.

I am trying to only stuff on the calendar that I have every intention of doing. I even need it to remind me to make phone calls which I hate doing. Like I had no hot water in my kitchen for 3 months and couldn´t bring myself to call the plumber, why?? I actually saw him in the street at least 8 times and still said nothing even though having no hot water was a real pain in the a***.

Eventually I called him, he came round the same day and it was fixed in 5 minutes.

Re: Reminders - I GIVE UP!!!

Making painful phone calls always goes like this for me: "I'll do it later tonight"

*three weeks pass*

"okay, I SWEAR I'll call tonight."

*another week passes and all hell has broken lose*

Re: Reminders - I GIVE UP!!!

I have to write everything, electronic reminders just don't work.
(and it's really too bad because the calendar and lists on Ipad are so nice. Especially that feature of turning pages...)

I use Log-i-Cal. A free calendar app that puts in my tasks at specific times of day, and has an alert system. It still says 'Go to bed NOW!' on it.

I've used it once.

Re: Reminders - I GIVE UP!!!

My reminders don't tell me to do anything... Maybe that's why they work.

Re: Reminders - I GIVE UP!!!

I have a reminder on my phone that says "Check this list!!!" I never do anymore, i just click it off. Writing this, I'm thinking I should just turn the dang thing off. LOL

I think reminders help with stuff that isn't day to day (other than my medication app), for things that are day to day I have lists.

I also use pretty apps that make sense to me, and that makes it easier to stick to. Those are for tasks, not day to day stuff. Anything I need to do, say, once a month is on there, but daily? Nope. I try to make myself accountable by checking the list every morning, and making it a habit. And I usually manage to do so. Checking things off is a different story

Re: Reminders - I GIVE UP!!!

The only reminders that work for me is my timer for short term i.e: 30 mins are up go check on the roast potatoes, or else hand written or typed lists and notes on paper. On a board right outside my bedroom door.

I thought "Remember the Milk" was a good idea but I haven't made use of it at all and probably never will and I always forget to check calendars and other such stuff on the internet.

I've given up looooooooooong ago with that stuff.

Re: Reminders - I GIVE UP!!!

I have three different things that remind me of the same event... Google calendars emails me, I have a to-do list program on my phone that is synced to my calendar, so it yells at me, and all of this also is synced to DH's phone Generally, he's the one that gets the ball rolling on whatever it is that needs to be done.
