my son has a girlfriend! !!!

All of a sudden the past week or 2 jake mysteriously has been shutting his door and talking on his phone. So at dinner Monday I asked him who he's been talking to. This is when he drops the bomb ....
" oh I'm sort of dating someone "
"Whats her name? "
"Mikayla "
"Oh what classes do you share? :
"None just study hall and lunch "

My boy is dating? ?? I know he's 16 but its so hard to comprehend. He tells me Thursday that shes a freshman. He says ..
"Saturday can you drop me off at the street fair ...we are going to walk around then go to the park "

Good lord! !!! I hope he is not doing anything physical yet....even if it seems inevitable. We talk alot about this kind of stuff I hope it sinks in. What do I do?

oooh Sarah, my son has had a few "girlfriends" oh my I am soooo jealous, I hate them and so does his sister. He has sometimes had crushes on "unsuitable" girls and his sister always gives these little girls a "warning", but I know shouldn´t interfere.

I can´t understand though, my daughter is 17 and I am happy for her to date, I enjoy seeing her grow up but my Little Baby Boy, I hate the thought of him having feelings for another female, it kills me.

We have loads of talks me and my two kids about AIDs, diseases, love, pregnancy and that condoms are not 100% safe.

Just keep the lines of communication open but resist the urge to say "something" other than "have fun" when you drop him off.

Your boys sounds like mine, sweetnatured and kind so I fear girls will take advantage of him and mess him around and hurt him.

We can do nothing other than always be there in the background, so they know they can always come to us.

trust that you've done a good job, sarah. taht's all i can think of to do, really. at taht age...you've given him information...raised him to konw your'e available if he needs you... trust yourself if you have occasion to meet her...be welcoming. personally, i wouldn't force the meeting though...let it happen so's to not come off overbearing. but overall, you raised a good kid, right? and it's good that he's getting on socially and starting to date

I would make SURE he has condoms, even if he says he doesn't need them yet. (My daughter told us she didn't need birth control and she had a baby at 15 years old-
she is I M P U L S I V E!!!!! We knew better than to take her word for it but she is the "baby" of our family and we still viewed her as too young to need it).

At that age, I was already bringing girls home and doing everything but...
Make sure that the only time he's closing that door is when he's on the phone! Be firm, but supportive. Don't give him too much opportunity to be stupid!

There's a range of course, but it is better than starting at 27. Even then, some make it, but it is a much easier process when starting younger. Not to mention, losing one's virginity is becomes rarer the older one gets, to my knowledge.

I'm just saying that there are worse behaviors a kid could aspire to, provided the necessary precautions have been taught, or learned informally. In my opinion, there's nothing wrong with physical activity at that age, as long as the proper protection is being used.

Ah Sarah ....a new stage eh ? ......that's what this is you realize.....starts at birth .....this is the "just starting to date" stage .....remember how yuou felt when it started kindergarten? .....scared but proud too ? ....

enjoy this .....he's starting to reallyu grow up .....and before you know it, he'll be a young man in love, and making his way in the world ...finding the "right girl" and getting married, and then you';ll be a grand mother ....YIKES ! .....

don't worry, I am teasing.....those last stages I just mentioned take years and years ....

.....You have been a great mom, and he WILL remember stuff that you would be amazed at .....he's a nice kid, and just taking those first steps to adulthood, .....just keep following your instincts, and you and DH will do just fine ...and so will he ....


Not every kid has tramatic teen years .,.....mine weren't really, compared to most folks I think .....I was a nice kid too, and lucky for me, I didn't want to mess around in the back seat of a car, so I kept it light until college, then I went looking ! ....but at 18, I was ready .....


.....Just enjoy this time of his life, the same way you have enjoyed all the other times of his life .....the one thing that ALL kids do .....is get older ...( I was going to say grow up, and then I thought ....er not all of them do that ...)

....be there when he needs you, and keep that sensible head on your shoulders.....
