I think I might have ADD

I'm almost 21 yo, I'm a girl.

I'm a bit afraid to go to the doctor because sometimes when I start talking about my learning problems I can't help but crying, and what if I find out I don't have ADD? At least if I find out I do have it, I'll know what I have ...

I've always had self esteem problems, particularly when I was in first grade I used to study a lot harder than other kids but my grades were poor.
As a teenager they told me a lot of times that I was a very insicure person.

I heard that people with ADD are impulsive, but I don't think I am. How do i know if I'm impulsive?

At school I was almost always very quiet, people asked me a lot "why you never talk?" people tell me I'm shy.
at school when we started to study music I found out I was the best at it even though I never took any private lessons, and some of my schoolmates did and I was better than them, i also used to have more imagination than most of my schoolmates when we had to do a project where we have to use our imagination I had so many ideas and I started many projects and didn't finish anyone.

When I was about 14 I fell in major depression I think because of my learning problem, it was really really horrible I had no peace. I never had panic attacs.
People often yell at me because I do something wrong.

The teachers used to yell at me because they thought I didn't care about school, my mother used to yell at me a lot for the same reason, it was tough to hear my mother saying to her friends "my daughter doesn't care about school, she really does not like learning new things, she's so lazy... bla bla" and I don't think I'm lazy most of the times and I really want to learn new things, but I CAN'T and whenever I say this people tell me "if everybody else can you can do it too, you're just convinced you can't"

And another unusual thing about myself is that my hadwriting used to change, one day I write in a way and another day or hours later I can't write well, and this did not seem to happen to other kids. Most of the time I'm not able to write well.

And back in high school I used to shake my leg a lot because I felt like doing it and because I tought it was cool but people made me notice that it's annoying so I try not to do it but sometimes I notice that I'm doing it.

I have this bad habit that I stare at people but I think this is because I am insicure. I'm trying to stop that too, but sometimes I notice I'm staring at someone after a while, and people get annoyed by this too.

can you please aswer to these questions:
1-How do i know if I'm impulsive?
2-Does ADD have something to deal with handwriting?
3-Do you think I might have ADD?
4-Do you ever think that most of the people are shallow?
5-Do you almost always have music on your head?

I don't have more questions yet

Re: I think I might have ADD

I am not an expert on ADD by any stretch but I have read a fair bit about it and am convinced that I have it (waiting for a diagnosis from my doctor). I'm 51 so have been dealing with this for a loooong time. So here is what I know/think:
1. Being impulsive means doing things without really considering the consequences of what you are doing, for good or for bad. This can mean talking without thinking of the effect of what you are saying, driving too fast, making quick decisions, looking back at your actions and asking: why did I do that and not really knowing why, etc.
2. Many people here have said that ADD has negatively affected their ability to write well (legibly, neatly, etc.) My handwriting is still awful and I found it very hard to learn cursive in school.
3. It is possible. I would do some self tests on the Internet and see how you score. Read some books at the library and see if you fit the ADD profile. Ask your doctor if they have any experience with ADD.
4. No. I think people are busy and self-absorbed so may not communicate as well as they might. Life is chaotic and we are all busy keeping our heads above water.
5. Yes...often the song is the last thing I heard on my clock radio as I wake up. Often it is a song I don't like just popping into my head. Sometimes it is just random. But I hear music in my head a lot of the time. Not sure if that is indicative of ADD or not.

So, do some research...be kind to yourself, try to be calm and think about what your life is like and how it might be better, and strive to make it better.

Best of luck!

Re: I think I might have ADD

I think itīs a possibility but you must be brave and go and talk to a professional. Donīt worry about crying (I have cried many times at the docs) they are used to it.

Explain what your problems are, just like your post. I have problems with handwriting, I am 47 years old and still donīt have a style of writing, it changes every day, the only thing consistent is that itīs illegible.

Impulsive can mean as stated in the above post but can also be things like misreading questions at school and writing the answer before youīve thought about it. My impulsiveness causes me to just read a few words of a question and immediately jump to a conclusion and start writing, often missing out words or mixing up small words.

The leg shaking can be a nervous habit or a sign of adhd (Iīve read many times that these types of movement help adhd sufferers concentrate) but can be annoying and distracting to others.

Itīs hard to grow up so misunderstood and for family members to label you as lazy and not trying hard enough. I think every adhd sufferer has heard these words far too many times and these can be very damaging, leading to lowered self esteem and depression.

So well done for posting on this board, the next step is to see a doctor. Have you spoken to your parents about this?

Re: I think I might have ADD

thank you for the answers. No I have never spoke about this to my parents and I don't even think that they know what ADD is, and I would rather not speak to them about this.
I did some test in internet and they said I possibly have ADD. What if I find out that I really have it, what happens next? I don't think it's necessary to take drugs for it.

Re: I think I might have ADD

I read about ADD in internet and it said that people with add are more immature... I look yonger than my age (I am almost 21 but I look like I'm 17) could it have anything to deal with it?

Re: I think I might have ADD

People with ADHD tend to be less mature and seem younger than others of the same age group because of our difficulty retaining and retrieving information, impulsiveness and our easy distractability, resulting in our not being able to learn from our mistakes as easily.

Although I don't believe there to be any proven scientific connection, there was recently a thread on the forum discussing whether or not people with ADHD tend to look young for their age. Looking young does not equate to being immature, though.

Compensating means that when you have difficulty doing something in a certain way, you are able to come up with other ways to achieve the same or a similar result, whether consciously or subconsciously. It also means making up for your own shortcomings by alternate methods.

Hope you are able to find the help you need - if you can figure out what is hindering you and get treatment for whatever it may be, I see no reason at all why you shouldn't be able to accomplish all the things you want to!

Re: I think I might have ADD

1-How do i know if I'm impulsive?-If your always doing stupid **** and flipping out all the time. It's when something annoys you and you don't even try to ignore/cope with it. This happened to me in class yesterday, some girl was talking while we're supposed to be writing notes. Me "SHUT THE F**K UP, SERIOUSLY!"
2-Does ADD have something to deal with handwriting?-It tends to be messy since you're not giving it enough attention. I have really sloppy writing and I have ADHD.
3-Do you think I might have ADD?It sounds like you do, without hyperactivity or impulsiveness. You might just shake your leg out of a habit, I still do even while medicated.
4-Do you ever think that most of the people are shallow?-YES
5-Do you almost always have music on your head?YES

Re: I think I might have ADD

Don't get attached to the diagnosis- it could be ADHD, it could be a lot of other things too.

The important thing is that you get help for your self esteem and educational issues. I would start by talking to your primary care doctor and/ or seeing a cognitive behavioral therapist, they should be able to advise you on whether you should see a psychiatrist or ADHD specialist for further treatment.

Research the disorder, but stay open to the possibility that it might be something else (depression, anxiety, a thyroid disorder, etc.)

Re: I think I might have ADD

Hi, there I recently got diagnosed, as well actually this week. Your problems with your hand writing is called Dysgraphia, I have as well its actually one of the indicators for ADD. I understand how u feel with writing! For me its not just about handwriting which is absolutely awful, can't write cursive for the life of me, but also for spelling, how I hate spelling I have never, or will ever be good at spelling! Do you know what I use google for thats right spelling.

Also Spellcheck is the greatest invention ever, I mean ever not only does it spellcheck my writing but helps with my punctuation, which is horrendous, beyond horrendous. When I discovered spellcheck, my life literally changed, it allowed me to continue going to school I'am at the university right now and with out spell check I would have never made it. I know am not going to get the best grades for essays but a c to a b are not bad for me. I also leave out words all the time when I write its incredibly annoying how many times I have to reread my writting to add words that assumed I worte! I get so embarrassed when I text or write facebook messages and words are left out, I always go back afterwords and message the word I left out.

Ohh by the way I don't have dyslexia or dyscalculia, which is a learning disability for math many people who have dysgraphia also have dyselexia or dyscalculia. I can actually read very very well so well that I was always in English honors, History honors, I do amazingly well on abc answers or fiil in the blanks, its just writing that gets me. Also dysgraphia makes you write really disorganiezed. For example I can tell you verbally exactly my thoughts and conclusions, but in written form it is not as good. My thoughts get jummbeld and confused.

Ohh and if I write for long periods of time my hands cramp, bad.On the bright side people with dysgraphia usually like me have wonderful verbal skills we can talk and explian much better and quicker than people without dysgraphia, thats because we think out loud, we process information while speaking, most people process information writing, writing for us just confuses the thought process People with dysgrahia tend to have excellent memories my add just makes me forget things but memorization for school work I can do.

Anyhow u are the only reason I joined this forum, believe if I can go to the university u can too, take it from a girl that was in esl, most of primary school and did not know how to read until the third grade, nor learn her abcs in order until highschool yes I didn't know! It takes twice even three times the time it takes other people to write and essay but I get it done, hopefully adderall will help the distraction and concentration don't know yet, I have only been taking it for three days, what I have noticed is that am not as bored anymore. Ohh and the music thing yes know exactly what u mean, I always have a song in my head. All the time! Hope this helps

Dysgraphia is not an indicator of adhd. While it may be common in those with adhd its not a symptom that is mentioned by the dsm or used to confirm adhd.

Re: I think I might have ADD

On that note, isn't it common for people with ADHD to have more trouble with getting their point across verbally?

I write much better than I talk- when writing I can move things around and get them to sound okay. It does take a lot of editing, I always leave words out.

My verbal communication is worse though- when I am talking everything is a jumbled mess, and it takes me forever to get to the point.
