How many members in your family have ADHD?

If you are a parent do all of your kids have adhd or do you suspect they do or has it only affected one child?

For adults, do you siblings have adhd or your parents (that you know of or suspect).

Or, do you have adhd, or suspect someone in your family has it.

My friend has a 15 year old boy and a 5 year old girl both adhd. Neither she nor her husband have adhd but she said her uncle probably has it.

I´m just wondering how strong the genetic link is.

Re: How many members in your family have ADHD?

Me and my brother have both been diagnosed as adults.

I suspect my dad has it and possibly my mum as well. I also suspect my dad has aspergers.

We have 2 half-sisters, same dad - different mums. I only know one of them but she doesn't have it. Her son has autism.

On my mum's side her sister's son was diagnosed with ADHD at 4 and I'm pretty sure that she has it too.

Not sure about ADHD in other's in my family but there's lots of other mental health problems.

Re: How many members in your family have ADHD?

Grandparents: none
Uncles: one w/ severe ADHD and another with a mild form (and one uncle with epilepsy but no ADHD).
Aunts: none that are obvious... although my mom is absent minded.
Siblings: none.
Cousins: one diagnosed ADHD (severe, like his dad). Another that isn't diagnosed (son of the uncle with a mild case).

Re: How many members in your family have ADHD?

Hmm...I think there is supposed to be a strong genetic link. My family just doesn't talk about this stuff. But if I remember correctly, my cousin was diagnosed with it. I suspect my uncle, and my sister. Maybe my mom too. These are all my maternal relatives.
Depression does not run in my family. Depression has instead walked through and got to know everyone personally :P

(And of course my dad's dad was diagnosed with schizophrenia, but I now believe he was misdiagnosed and really had bipolar. I also suspect my dad has it.)

But back to ADHD....no we don't have confirmed cases mostly because my family just doesn't 'do' doctors.

Re: How many members in your family have ADHD?

mom, grandpa, possibly all 4 uncles, possibly an aunt, and maybe another aunt since she's just cool and different buy i dont remember if we considered her ADD. so total is at least 4 people in my family are ADDU, and 7-8 total possible.

these are all on my mom's side. my dad's side is straight-laced normal people, and my mom's other siblings are NT, my cousins are all NT with exception of a few who have other problems like Anxiety, Depression, Problems with the Law, and us being the cast of *******...but that's not necessarily a problem : D

Re: How many members in your family have ADHD?

i think something worth noting is that im the only person in the whole family who has ADHD (let alone ADHD-C specifically), but im also the only one ever diagnosed.

my or my brother's doctors (doctors for very different reasons) have talked to my mom and implied they think she's ADD.

all the ADDU people of my mom's side are all High-Functioning though. i can only now see them as ADDU when i think about it and how ive known them, otherwise before that conversation with my mom, i wouldnt have suspected any of my uncles or aunts, but my grandpa's ADDU is as clear is day. but he's 83 and still practicing Cardiologist. and my mom's siblings are all successful in their own ways.

i think its funny im the special one who is like i said above, the only Diagnosed, and the only ADHD. im suprised my cousins and my bro dont have AD/HD, some have tendencies/traits that can be seen as symptoms of AD/HD but none are official...although im also the 5th youngest of all of us so that could be a factor too.

if any of my 4 younger cousins (although its more like the 2 youngest since the other 2 are in highschool now) have AD/HD then that means they might be diagnosed too and i wont be alone!

Re: How many members in your family have ADHD?

I told my parents last night that I had adhd. I thought I got it from my dad, because he's the poster child for it. But then when I talked to my mom about it, everything I mention she was like "I do that too!", she's getting tested for it so she can focus better at work. So I'm pretty sure they both have it. I just didn't stand a chance for a NT brain.

Re: How many members in your family have ADHD?

My dad had it, and I'm pretty sure that the majority of his siblings have it, and that my grandfather had it. None were dx'ed as far as i know. I have a few cousins that have been dx'ed.

My mom is fond of saying- "I have never met a family like your father's".

Re: How many members in your family have ADHD?

My dad's never been diagnosed, but we're like 90% sure that he has ADHD. And he's definitely on the hyperactive side, whereas I lean towards inattentive. My brother has NLD (Nonverbal Learning Disorder), but other than that our family seems to be relatively neurotypical. My mom has made a strong case trying to prove that my grandpa has Asperger's, but maybe we're just used to diagnosing people.

Re: How many members in your family have ADHD?

My dad had PTSD which looked a lot like ADHD but probably wasn't.

The ADHD and Autism genes come from my mom's side, although she
probably only had a very mild form along with some sensory issues.

Out of three other siblings, only one has ADHD (plus Anxiety and OCD).

My daughter says she doesn't have it, just a stressful life.
But it looks like mild ADHD to me. I only have one offspring.

I have two granddaughters. The oldest has ADHD. The youngest has
Atypical Autism, and it's looking more and more like she has ADHD as well.

I have cousins, second and third cousins with ADHD and Autism, mom's side.

Re: How many members in your family have ADHD?

My mom is pretty sure her brother has ADHD (he had a stroke last year which added further mental impairments).

Neither parent has it, sister doesn't, if any of my dad's siblings have ADHD, it would be Inattentive, but I haven't noticed anything.
