writing and reading long posts

When writing and reading long posts(mainly writing long post), Do you often find yourself taking a lot longer than it should. I mean like REALLY long, like hours writing a mere 1 page or 2 page post. I often when forced to write a long post, Find myself taking hours trying to finish it.

After every 5 to ten minutes or every sentence, I'll space off and think about something that my writing made me think of or something completely different and then I'll either get up and start walking around my house thinking about it or I'll spend 15 minutes throwing a pen up and down.

When I hit road blocks that forces me to really think about something, i'll just stop and the pause will be even longer untill I find the motivation to force myself to think about it. This happends all the time to me.

One time I was responding to a post on dreamviews, and I spent what I think was 6 to 7 hours writing a post which wasn't even that long. Most of it spent on day-dreaming which starts from me thinking about what I'm writing then it graduates to something completely irrelevent untill I remind myself to get back on task.

Re: writing and reading long posts

I never write very long posts and if someone writes a really long post I tend to skip paragraphs. I usually read the 2 first and 2 last paragraph of a long post and if I find it interesting Then I read the middle and get involved in the thread!

Re: writing and reading long posts

I don't often write long posts but I frequently make 5 posts in a row. That's just how my brain works- "oh, another thought!" and on and on.

I usally read the beginning and end, and then reply to that. Which means I've usually missed some important piece of information that makes my reply irrelevant or completely wrong, but oh well.

Re: writing and reading long posts

I make long posts sometimes. I don't really mean to and know I should just get to the point, but I have a natural tendency to ramble on...

There is a 90%+ correlation between text walls and an immediate backspace keystroke (hotkey for "Go back one page").

Re: writing and reading long posts

Um, a caveat: I suppose I'm a somewhat dubious source, in an adhd context. I'm not confidently self-diagnosed... More just. Eyeing some lifelong sources of frustration (and various benign "quirks") with growing suspicion.

Still. I take ALL DAY to write emails RATHER FREQUENTLY (when I'm forced to write emails at all). Though the norm for me is more like two to four hours for anything approaching half a page, even with enough of a sense of urgency that I don't do any other web-surfing/procrastinating for the duration. I both zone out and compulsively edit/adjust content even when I know I don't have time to :\

Oh, and I think this post took just under 3 hours to write (though I did change my mind a lot about how to phrase things, and about what is/isn't actually salient enough to include... writing speed for me is usually about equally as affected by my brain wandering within the parameters of the post, over-editing, as it is by my getting distracted by thoughts...).

Re: writing and reading long posts

I stick to short posts, but if I do a long one, I end up taking a couple hours because I start, wander off on other webpages, and then come back, edit, and re wander off.

Re: writing and reading long posts

Sometimes I break up long posts throughout a day, but mostly I write them in one go. What I will often do, however, is read a post, know that I want to respond to it, but I just leave it up in a wndow and come back to it in a few hours. 'course sometimes I then reboot without replying and then I'll completely forget I wanted to respond!

However:

this I have a lot of trouble with. I try and break my long posts up, but have a real hard time reading walls of text posts. What I'll do, sometimes though is highlight a portion with the mouse, then keep on going down. But I think everyone on an internet forum should err on the side of pushing Enter too often than not often enough!

Re: writing and reading long posts

My approach to reading and writing posts is pretty scattered. Also, I never right extremely long posts, not that I recall, anyway. I've often marveled at some of the long-winded posts on here, and I know I could never do that.
