Adderall causing impotence?

On the issue of adderall causing impotence.....is this a temporary side effect? Is there any way to get rid of this side effect?

Seriously, my husband was on dex and although he didn't get impotence, we had to wait until 4-5am everyday to "you know". Not Funny!!!! Now he's dumped the dex and all is well. Or, takes it on an "as needs" basis, which has no effect sexually.

Just watch that your dosage is not too high, or perhaps your body is adjusting to the meds. Don't panic, or you'll get worse !

My husband found he could get the benefits from dex on a lower dosage than the Dr prescribed. This helped, and we could "you know" throughout the day.

i joined the forum today after reading this post. i've been lurking for a while but since i'm a bit scared then i thought i would reach out to the community and also contribute.

one of the few things i have been able to count on in this life has been my libido. i'm queer and sex is politics and religion as well as fun. imagine my fear as i tell you that my ***** hasn't worked for a week.

sometimes stress interupts function and sometimes my ***** has refused to cooperate for certain people but never like this.

my add has been diagnosed since college (10 years) but i avoided medication until last spring. for about six months i took metadate cd and/or generic ritalin on an as needed basis. average 30mg per day, three days a day. it worked. i felt focused and alive. this does not mean i got work done. in order to be minimally productive i started taking the drug every day about six weeks ago. i take 20 mg of metadate cd every morning and then i either take another cd at about 2pm or i divide a generic 20 mg tab in half and take one around 1pm and another around 3pm.

when i took metadate as needed, it enhanced both my libido and physical response. after keeping it in my system for an extended period, both are dramatically diminished. yes, i have made an appointment but i wonder if anyone has thoughts on this thesis:

A: i've worn out a receptor
B: i've gotten used to this level of dopamine/stimulant

I am Viktoria's (RhapsodyinBlue) husband.
I was diagnosed with ADHD and placed on dexamphetamine at 30mg per day. At this time I was not informed by my doctor of any possible adverse health effects on my sexuality.

The effects on my sexual performance ability was dramatic. Dex , even the quick release form, does remain in the body for significant time after the last dosage. My last dose was normally around 4pm and we found, as Viktoria mentioned, it took until around 4-5am, (12 hours later) for things to return to "normal". My personal experience has been that the negative effects may last even longer than this to some lesser degree. I estimate 24 hours at least.

Extensive online research by Viktoria and myself came across a very unpleasant discovery. There is a published study or survey and I cannot remember where, that states ....85 percent of men taking significent levels of dex or similar related stimulant compounds, suffer sexual dysfunction at some level, or can expect to suffer sexual impairment/impotence if the medication is continued long term.

I also have read online somewhere, that high (whatever high is) levels of dex over a long period of time can lead to irrepairable loss of sexual function.

Naturally, the multi billion dollar pharmacutical companies manufacturing stimulants for ADHD, dont advertise these type of facts widely.

Dex/ritilan, has been sometimes prescribed at very low levels to aid sexual performance but at the levels taken for ADHD, it seems that sexual dysfunction may occur after a period of time , for the vast majority of men.

I have also found that my dosage of dex could be substantially reduced from 30mg per day while still retaining the benifits. Since stopping taking stimulant medication on a daily basis my body has recovered.

Try reducing your intake to the minimum possible and also to take regular drug breaks of substantially reduced or no meds, eg weekends,holidays

A warning there is a difference between reduced libido and none at all. My MD and psychiatric nurse practitioner were convinced my issues were with the various meds I've been on. I had no desire, I mean no desire, like not being hungry . Turned out my issue was a near total shut down of testosterone production. I'm 40 with a T level that is rare for men in their 60s!

I noticed a drop in interest throughout my 30s, I gained the pear shaped gut, and developed a pretty good case of irritable old man syndrome. If this sounds familiar have your doctor check your testosterone level. I'm described as highly functioning with my ADHD, one of my puzzles is why I did fairly well for 30+ years and started having serious problems in my late 30s. The loss of testosterone was probably the cause of my inability to cope and function and led to the ADHD diagnosis. BTW I do have ADHD I have no doubt of that, but the serious issues of anger, and depression were related to hormone issues.

Now that I'm on hormone replacement therapy I'm finding the depression is lifting, I'm a lot less irritable, weight is dropping, I can eat anything and not gain weight, the way I was in my teens and twenties. And my sex life is coming back.

Incidently the hormone levels, based on my symptoms history, dropped several years before taking any medications. The best theory so far for why I have my issue is a back injury, the nerve to the testicles is pinched and causes the low testosterone production.

I currently take 300mg of Wellbutrin and 10 to 30 mg of Adderall a day and a testosterone ointment I apply to my shoulder. Oh as far as long term side effects from any of these meds, without the meds I would live a much shorter life than I will with them. My depression was severe enough that untreated I would have eventually taken my own life.

i have been talking adderal..or some form of a.d.d. medication..it wasn't till recently that i needed a higher, and a time relese dosage, and for work, becasue i can't leave work every few hours to take a pill. i work fast food and most of the time you stay in front to greet the costomers, so i needed a time relese pill, and a higher dosage than i was taking also to make me really focas,and also 30mg helps balance my mood as well as fully corrects my a.d.d...I i have 2 questions...
1. is adderal also used for an anti-depressant.casue i had been lingering around the idea of trying to get prescribed to a small anti-depressant.like zoloft for a few months, then I got my dosage from 10-30mg time relese x.r. and since then ive got more work done everyday, ive double my hours at work, i go through the day happy and pleasant... i think deeper..i play guitar better... I use to have alot of concerns about myself due to sem-serious and growning anger issues and a very short temper..noone really wanted to make me mad, and seeing me mad was scarry for friends and family members at time and i couldn't controll myself alot of times, and i have scars on my knuckles from hitting things, but adderal balances me out and i never lose my temper and and able to catch myself when i start to get upset and calm down... so adderal helps my anger,balances my mood outand helps with mild depression and helps me to put my all into everything i do!!! adderal is the best thing out there i ahve ever taken for anythingthe only strange side effect besides loss of appetite, wich eat before and when i starts to wear off, and i remain the same weight and gain weight as i age and build muscle, but im only 19 and i have a high metabolism so i generally stay from about 128-135 depending on how often i eat and exercise...well...when im on adderal, especially when i can kinda feel a little buzz, kinda like the buzz you get if you aren't use to ciggarettes, but a little different, my penis goes,and stays flacid for hours!!!, and im not able to get an errection for basically the whold day!...i dont like to skip any days, but sometimes i have to if i dont want to be stuck like that for HOURS!..is there anything i can do to take adderal and not have this very unconvienent side effect of no libido? i would appreciate any helpfull input thanks john

My Dr. said that it is expected to have sexual side effects from LONG term use of stimulants at levels greater than 5mg's per day. I can tell you from my experiance that this is true. So my Dr. has offered me VIAGRA any time I want it. You might want to try Viagra? it works!

I've noticed a major increase in my sex drive since starting Adderall about a month ago. I'm guess it's because I stopped taking anti-depressants (which really wiped it out), but now I feel like I can't get enough! It's almost starting to bother me because I orgasm very quickly. I'm hoping my sex drive will adjust to a normal level soon; right now I'm attributing it to several years on anti-depressants followed by an immediate move to Adderall. Anyone else experiencing this?

I take 30ms 2X and my early evening does is 15mgs thats a total of 75mgs a day. My sex life has improved so much that I think My wife of 17 years is finally happy, however taking Aderrall every day can put the Kabosh on certain individuals libido, so I recommend that anybody experiancing a low or no drive should discuss this with their Phyc, my Dr. can't beleive the turn around in my general mental being, in that everything has slowed way down, no more (RACING THOUGHT IN MY HEAD) since I restarted taking the aderall. I hope the rest of you adhd suffers find the aproppriet solution to sexual side affects or disfunction which is extremly common with adhders.

Well Tara quite interesting, but as I've stated above, I'm probably the one of the few here that are taking a much higher daily dose of adderall 75mgs a day, and have not experianced any negative function with my P...... as of yet, However for those who have lost interest with their sposes or mates, should probably try Porn to see if their able to get aroused or not, just a thought.
