Worried about Depression

Hello, my name is Steve. I am a 20 year old college student and I just recently started taking Concerta. My doctor is pretty much a quack, because when I told him I thought I had ADD about 3 months ago, he pretty much handed me a perscription for Adderall without doing any tests or referring me to a nuerologist. However now I am 100% sure I have ADD after taking the meds. I started taking that and it worked great. I was able to get all my work done and it helped tremendously. After awhile I started getting worried about some of the side effects, and told him I wanted to try something else. I switched to Concerta 54 mg and now I just feel tired alot. I have never really been that happy all the time, and have had depressive episodes. Lately I have been thinking alot about certain things and I often feel depressed. I even felt this way on the Adderall. I'm wondering now if I should tell the doctor, who is kind of shady, if I should start taking anti-depressants. I have started to take SAM-e which is a supplement which is suppose to improve moods. I only started taking it, so I don't know if it's helping yet. The other thing is that I'm under my parents health insurance and I would have to let them know that I am taking these AD's. I have never really been that close with my parents and could never talk to them about stuff like that. Depression has never been in our family, so I don't know how they would react. Any feedback on this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks guys!

My big discovery about stimulants has been that less often got me better results. We are all different though so talk to a specialist about this.

It might be a good idea to seek out someone you respect to help you treat your ADHD. A knowledgeable professional can be a great help.

I do all kinds of things to try and help besides taking medication. I run, meditate and watch that I don't eat a lot of "white" foods like sugar, white flour, pasta, white rice and such. Those foods tend to put me on a bit of a roller coaster emotionally. Coffee is another thing that messes with my blood sugar.

Hope you get some relief soon.
Cheers! Ian.

First off Welcome to the Forum.

There are alot of things you can do, do you want to is the question. First your doctor, If you think the guys a Quack, then why go to them? Find one YOU like and trust.

Now your parents, I would be upfront and tell them. Dont be afraid and you could use all the support you can get, Thats why your here! Your family history may play a big part of this and they may be able to shed some light on a few things. Would you want to know if it was YOUR child?

Go and have your self screened and find out first. As Itschaotic said above there are alot of ways of controlling this, if its ADD or something else Meditation, St. Johns wart, etc. But you need to know and understand what you up against.

Dont be a car mech and guess at what it might be, find out.

If you dont care for your health and life then who will? You must care, for you have made the first few steps. We are all here for you.
The hardest thing about growing up,
is doing what is right for you.
Even if it means breaking a heart,
including your own.
