Attention Deficit Disorder - What do you think about the term "ADDers"?
Somebody I know (not ADD but her kid is) hates the term because she says it reminds her of snakes. What do you folks think?
Oops! Don't know why the apostrophes turned into slashes!!! |

I don't care for the conotation of the term ADD as representing Attention Deficit Disorder
My preference is ADD ADDaptable Directed Determined

I prefer not to be limited by any one term.
I call people ADDers very often, but not pronounced like the snake, more like Ay-Dee-Dee-Ers... |

I never thought of 'adder' the snake either. I always read it as Paul pronounces it. Someone suggested the lady in question may have some Freudian issues
I should also mention that her 'kid' is in her twenties. |

My reaction was "like it", but also "don't give a hoot". Chose "like it" because I know I am biased by being very fond of the expression "don't give a hoot".
I think names should have vague alternative or wider connotations; it makes them richer. I'd never thought of the snake, though, either (merrie, your "Freudian issues" comment made me laugh!). I was pronouncing it "adder" too (rather than "ay-dee-dee-er"), but only with the ring of "accumulator" (don't put it down to my mathematical/computing background, will you!) - gatherer of multiple impressions etc, "non-sequencer"... (bit far-fetched, I know)

Were you thinking of 'accumulate' as in 'piles of papers and a houseful of stuff'? ![]() |

I read somewhere that there are two types of add'ers -
The ones that don't 'do' word type stuff very well and the ones that don't 'do' numbers type stuff very well. Something like that - I need to go back and look up more info on this - But, as far as this subject goes... Adders makes me think of maths. And to that I say YUK! YUK! YUK! If I pronounce it A-D-D ers.. then its not so bad ![]() Love N Stuff, Opal |

Merrie, I think I was thinking of piles of paper etc but I'm not quite sure any more (sorry I didn't reply sooner, by the way - forgot to check this thread) - the image I had in my mind was myself (for example) confronted with things to do, react to etc, unable to start - just adding new things to do to the mental list of things not started (and not being able to take anything off the mental list). The typical setting for this certainly would be a cluttered house - piles of paper to be sorted (or thrown away), laundry and washing up, children's toys etc.
Regarding your idea, Opal, I've got that impression here too: some ADDers are regarding it as ADD-typical that they are inarticulate or 'dyslexic' (but good visually and with mathematical or technical stuff) - others conversely that their problems with maths as against their ability to articulate verbally etc is ADD-typical. So presumably the 'big' view has to take into account both types - but how people divide is still a question; I imagine it's at least partly the fact that ADDers are not very good at overcoming their frustration at staying with something that doesn't immediately click. Sorry, slightly crudely or simplistically expressed - and if you've read up on it you probably know much more about it than I do (I haven't, yet. I'm a mixture - can be very articulate or I can be struck dumb my mental blocks (or get carried away in a slightly thoughtless rant). Mathematically, I'm strong (maybe more clearly or consistently than verbally), but I get blocks there too and am not good at all at reading mathematical texts - so I am constrained by what's within intuitive grasp. As I get older I seem to get more 'word-orientated', but this may only come from experience (s'pose that's stating the obvious!). But who asked about me!? Jonathan

Adders as accumulators also works in the sense that many of us are people who are continually trying to improve our lives. I feel like an "adder" in that respect.

I use "individuals with ADHD" or "individuals with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder" so I don't have the probllems. If you pronounced it like "add - ers" I can see the problem. since Adders are a class of poisonous snake. However, most people pronounce it "ay dee dee ers," which gets rid of that problem fairly well.

I use ADD'ers to save time and energy typing. I believe I would only be able to find offense if the context the abbreviasion was used in was derrogatory but then I'm biased and believe myself one the special, chosen few who were given a gift at birth. *grins*
