Jackal - Columbia, MD

Welcome ADDers. Lets see I was born in late 1950 and this is 2005 so 2005 - 1950 -1 = 54 years old. Sound funny but that is what I usually do in my head. I'm also a male with a (skip the math) 24 year old son and 20 year old daughter that have recently been diagnosed with ADHD. I always thought ADHD kids were the ones that bounced off the walls in school but a friend of my wife with ADD explained that that was only one type. After my wife read a couple of books and then had me read them, we were convinced that most of the symtoms sounded just like problems my daughter, son and myself have had all our lives. And I alway thought I was just crazy. Also it explained a lot about my father's uncontrolled temper. I am scheduled to get officially tested in early June. At this time none of us are on any medication but knowing what it is all about is helping anyway.

Even though every one said I was smart, I struggled through school. Heard all the usual comments: "underachiever, stupid, lazy, spacey, unmotivated". But I did find that some times I could achieve a lot. My hopes of becoming a music teacher fell apart because of my ears and it took me ten years to eventually fall into software development. That fit me like a glove and I've done well at that for 23 years. Give me a complex problem that I can hyperfocus on and I'm as happy as a clam. But give me an easy assignment or administrative task that I don't feel is important and I can procrastinate for days. ADD also explains the problems I have with butting into conversations and my lack of ability to control by frustrations.

I've been reading addforums for a few weeks now and it has been very interesting. I'm seeing a lot of posts that explain alot about me.
