Grandson age 6 started Strattera

Hello, I'm new here, so a bit about our situation: My grandson is 6 and has been diagnosed as ADHD. Since he was 3 he's been in trouble at daycare, been kicked out of three preschools before he started kindergarten. Now he is in 1st grade and has gotten better, but the teachers and counselors and therapist all said we should try medication for him to reach his full potential and not be left out socially.

He is doing 2nd-3rd grade reading and math, but really is just a BBB...bright, bored boy.

He is 14 days into taking Strattera, started with 5 mg, then 10 mg, and now 25 mg. His personality has changed so much.

Before he was happy, chatty, busy, annoying, exuberant, and just a wonderful kid who couldn't sit still or control his impulses.

Now, he is easily frustrated, excessively impulsive, defiant, aggressive, and shows no remorse. It's hard to see an improvement in school because of his behavior.

Is this normal? Will these side effects go away, and how long does it take? Should we take him off or stick it out?

Any help is greatly appreciated

Re: Grandson age 6 started Strattera

Those don't sound like normal side effects.

Medication shouldn't change his personality, but rather make it easier for him to control his impulses and focus.

Can you contact the doctor soon to discuss changing (possibly lowering) the dose of Strattera, or changing to a different medication altogether?

Stimulants (like Ritalin, Adderall, Dexedrine, Concerta, Vyvanse, etc.) are considered first-line medication treatments for ADHD because of their efficacy -- and they don't take weeks to take full effect like Strattera can.

Best wishes for your little guy and your family!
