Lightbulb My Relationship w/ Vyvanse: Getting Off

Hi all,
After finally getting off Vyvanse for good, I have been compelled on my down time from work to write this quick overview on my thoughts & experiences regarding this love/hate relationship I had gone through with this drug. My hope is that doing so not only helps me move on to the next chapter in my own life, but that anyone having questions on living with this drug... that perhaps my honest experience may offer some clarification or gather any insight to unanswered questions.

Who I am:

25 year old male mechanical engineer, graduated two years ago and have been working full time since. Successfull in my career and an intelligent person both before and after being diagnosed with ADHD.

Dosage/Duration:

Been using Vyvanse everyday for 4 years. The baby blue 60mg was the minimum I took, and it was prescribed by my doc. On average I consumed three times this amount, usually two 60mg's upon waking up followed by another 60mg at noon. A fourth dose of 60mg was not uncommon. These were not provided by my doctor. Every second weekend give or take I would go on a drug holiday weekend, depending if I could sleep all weekend or if family events/tasks had to be done.

How I stopped:

Cold turkey. Havent consumed for 1 month. Life for me is better without vyvanse. I slept for a week straight. Then off & on tired for a week. Now it has flat lined with an end result that I just need 8-9 hours of sleep a day that my body gets wether I want it to or not. Seems normal, just im used to running on 3-4 so it's a mental change. I got a new job offer I couldnt refuse, and during the transition of jobs I asked for some vacation time to finally divorce vyvanse for good. It allowed me to embrace being able to sleep and have my mind and body relax. Also, I am very insecure about my body and weight. The hunger is just so intense I let it win, succumbed to the pleasure of eating. I wrote it off in my head as letting my body refuel and started embracing the astronomical weight gain.

What I learned:

- At first, using vyvanse makes you loose weight like never before. Leans you out better than the strongest of fat loss drugs you can find, both over & under the counter.
- After 2 years your metabolism and adrenals finally give up. Cortisol levels sky rocket, and the end result is you gain all weight back and more while ON the drug. To boot, fat gained is deposited much much unevenly around the belly/ect.
- Developing a tolerance is inevitable.
- Hair loss is inevitable. Hormone related forsure.
- Higher the dosage, higher the side effects.
- There is such a thing as having no energy while on Vyvanse. Looking back past my time as an athlete in University, racing professionally ect; I was the least active during my entire life while on the drug. The irony.
- Amphetamines = impulsive behaviour.
- Getting married to Vyvanse made me more motivated, but not necessarily more productive. The more I took, the more impulsive I became which negated the productivity of the tasks I was trying to accomplish to begin with. Mind twister.
- Digging deeper, it raises the question as to what productivity actually is in the eyes of an individual: doing robotic repetitive tasks at a high volume and efficient rate, or seeing the bigger picture and ultimate goal of your projects/tasks your trying to accomplish. Take that one sigmund freud.
- If you marry Amphetamines be prepared to say hello to her cousin Bipolar Disorder, it's a real thing who knew.
- You will develop two people. One person while on vyvanse, and another while off vyvanse, aka the sleepy grouchy hungry person.
- You can NOT have a meaningful relationship on Vyvanse.
- If you can in fact have a meaningful relationship on Vyvanse, this means you mustered up some leftover empathy in your emotions that Vyvanse has not chipped away at yet. But you will NOT have meaningful sex.
- Yes, premature ejaculation. Yes.
- Cialis only goes so far before hormonal issues are not the reason you can't get hard, but prostate issues are the reason.
- Vyvanse causes depression, from the aforementioned points above along with a bunch of other reasons not listed.

Farewell sweet Vyvanse, I now bid you adieu.
It's been real.

This has not been my experience. I have never noticed a large weight loss or gain with stimulants.

This has also not been my experience. I have experienced the need for dose changes but you were taking recreational doses so your evaluation of tolerance and stuff wouldnt be the norm.

I Have never heard of stimulants affecting hormones but I have heard some people complain of hair loss.

Well of course a higher dose means worse side effects. But again, you were taking recreational doses so these experiences were unique to you. I do not believe amphetamines cause impulsivity unless maybe you do not have adhd.

I strongly disagree with amnphetamines and BP being linked this way, that sounds like loose conjecture. I tend to get defensive when I hear misinformation about bipolar.

See, all of these things are because you took recreational doses and not doses as prescribed by your doctor. I want to make that distinction because if this is so you can share the horrors of abusing vyvanse thats fine, but I do not want someone new to the drug, taking it as prescribed, thinking this will happen to them,

Re: My Relationship w/ Vyvanse: Getting Off

Thank you for sharing your story. First thing my Dr said to me when I walked in his office is I don't prescribe over 40 mg.
I do understand that the pressure of your studies would have pulled and stretched you every which way. Congratulations you made it.
Have to agree with Sarah here, that distinction you make is completely wrong.
I'm on Dex, and I know I beat the drum, but I've found my experience more positive.
I have noticed that if I take a break from the medication my appetite increases, I think what's really important is that you live a more healthy lifestyle while on the drug. Make room for exercise.
I enjoy the clarity, planning, softness and purpose while taking Dex. I think the trick here is not believing the pills can do everything, there only part of the solution.

Re: My Relationship w/ Vyvanse: Getting Off

Well, I guess that’s what happens when you abuse prescription amphetamines, even the weakest one of them all, Vyvanse.

Cheers,
Ian

I'm sorry to hear that you went through that, but I disagree with your use of generalizations. Just because you experienced those effects does not mean that others will have those effect. In fact, I would argue that your experiences are on the extreme negative end of the spectrum.

I wish you the best for your future endeavors, and I also hope that others who are reading your post will keep in mind that they might (and probably will) have a different experience than what you had.

Re: My Relationship w/ Vyvanse: Getting Off

Re: Vyvanse dosage too low yet I'm still having insomnia??
I'm taking vyvanse on off since 2012, i have also taken Adderall and Dexedrine(IR and xr). Unfortunaly here in my country we only have vyvanse here as a amphetamine based med. Yes...no IR meds for adhd but ritalin.

I had to travel to USA to get dex. And as a lot you have experienced, you can get a quick tolerance from dextroamphine only meds(Vyv and Dex).

Thata why vyv starts to work only for a few hours, for me 4 hours at most, unless if i up my dosage, which is not good but inevitable if i stiil want to manage my adhd symtoms, im my case i study all day.
And believed me , i tried all kind of mixes, diets and etc and only this year, January first to be exact, after one whole year without meds, since only Vyv would no worth the side effects without a booster like dex. The rebound effect is ugly and the med symply doesnt work long enough.

Well so this year i decided to try the combo Vyvanse and wellbutrin finally worked! No more rebound effects, helped Vyvanse lasts longer etc. However tolerance was coming back again even at a high dose(#2 50mg).
Then i decited to try something new, i started taking the same 2 Vyvanses, but with half an hour of space between, actually you can add more time between since the second dose gotta be not too late for you to fall asleep the time you need to get a good rest, since sleep is a priority to manage adhd and for the med to work.

So #2 vyvanses(30min between them) + wellbutrin finally worked!
And for last but very important, you gotta exercise to help u sleep earlier and better and i also take clonidine and magnesium chelated to also help sleep. With this things plus a good diet maybe can help you with vyvanse tolerance issues.

Ps: A lot of people dont care, but i always try to keep my diet as alcaline as possible to help prolong the vyvanse, i know some people say this doesn't work with vyvanse, but for me it works, as an exemple, i take mango juice(from the fruit) and i feel immediatly a boost since mango os very alcaline.
Anyway, thats just my opinion based on a lot of reading this past years
