Unhappy Do I have ADD or I am I just lazy/Anxiety or Aviodance

Hi.

I am form the UK and retaking my first year uni as I failed all my exams last year Bar one by luck and coursework. When I mean fail I mean not attending lectures, under 5 hours of revision/work, along with depression,Insomnia, getting fatter (which I've dealt with),porn and internet/you tube addiction and my life long issues with reclusiveness and social anxiety.

My academic life has not been an issue for years during by secondary school aged 11-16 (high-school ) and I got descent grades in the end, but primary school aged 3-11 (elementary school) I was underachiever and behind at least 2 grades and have always had spelling issues then peers until the last two years where I was good at science and got good enough grades to get me into my secondary school.

so for years my school work was fine till A-Levels and Uni where my grades have progressively gotten more worse and my procrastination and study anxiety/overwhelming workload has made be think I may had ADD.

I've always been a daydreamer in my own fantasy world but at least during my secondary days it was not getting in the way of anything other than socially, and iv improved a lot in that area and alcohol helped a bit too for my interactions with people ect but studies and other aspects of my life are being affected and I don't know if its ADD, Anxiety due to new Independence/responsibilities (sheltered home/abusive/neglective parents) laziness or something else?

I am a forgetful person and do daydream a lot specially when there music,TV,film,YouTube, internet etc and even know when I should do work ill look up stuff online or what ever.

Also, I am going for a Test for learning difficulties but is it gonna help for my exams in Jan?

also caffeine seams to hold back my daydreaming, or make it easier for me to push it out, for a limited time but afterwards get a rush of unfocused daydreaming and procrastination.

Have you seen a doctor? Many of the symptoms you have described sound like ADD, as untreated ADD can cause anxiety, daydreaming, procrastination, etc.

Re: Do I have ADD or I am I just lazy/Anxiety or Aviodance

Just paid for my tests for ADHD, Aspegers and Dyslexsia today and have appointment on the 16th nov.

Also wanted to know if meds where best help as I heard neroalfeedback is better?

I am also signed up to counciling and other help stuff at uni.

I have many social issues too and they have improved at uni but iam not sure if thats just cause of alochol or the whole uni environment?

Re: Do I have ADD or I am I just lazy/Anxiety or Aviodance

Good afternoon,

I'm also a university student and newly diagnosed in the spring. I have found that through my therapist I was able to start digging through what symptoms I had, what was normal and what I needed help with, and starting to create a plan to work on things that may help me moving forward.

For me it took the university less than two weeks after formal testing to implement accessibility tools that assisted with my course work such as more time for testing, tutors, writing coaches for essays etc. which has been quite helpful in reducing the anxiety and helping me organize my schedule and stay on task which is very hard for me to do without their help.
