Adderall - kidney pain?

I really hope all this may apply to will share their experiences - the minor to severe.

I have been on Adderall for about 3 years now, and I am noticing some pain near my left kidney. The pain goes away and comes back in varying degrees. Sometimes my lower back hurts, sometimes my front left as well. I'm getting concerned.

I read that Adderall is metabolized in the Kidney, which makes me wonder whether this pain we feel could have to do with the ammount (or lack of) food + h20 we are consuming. I had always heard to drink plenty of water when taking pills, but there have been times that I have popped an adderall on an empty stomach, and even without any water.

When I asked my doctor about it, he was quick to say that what I was feeling was probably just a muscle, because I often sleep on that side. Still, I have a doubt ... because I can feel it burning/sore when I'm just relaxing. It does also bother me when I press on it with my fingers, and when I move around in certain ways. It's been off and on for about a year, but it never really bugged me when I was off the adderall for the summer.

Does anyone else experience these kidney pains?

Many thanks,
Jonathan

I've experienced similar before but not very often. Is your urine very dark yellow or orange? If I have dark urine OR kidney pain, I always try to drink lots of water. However, if I have dark urine AND there is kidney pain involved like you are describing, I will drink as much water as I can! This flushes out your systen and helps your kidneys filter out everything. My kidney pains will go away relatively quickly and my urine becomes clearer. I don't know how much water you are drinking now but try to drink more. Example- if you hardly drink any (this was me at one point), try to drink a bottle or two a day. If you already do that, try to double your water intake (2-4 bottles). Hope this helps!

Thank you very much for the response. You have no idea how worried I am about taking this stuff with the pain I have been experiencing. My body is telling me something isn't right, but I feel I won't succeed in school without being able to concentrate. If anyone has anymore info on the kidney stuff please chime in.

Does the water drinking help? It always helps with me, like I said, especially if I have dark urine.

Let us know how you're doing.

If it really bothers you, go back to your doc and demand some information, ask him what else could be causing this.

There are various tests that can be taken to check out your kidneys (CT scan, urine analysis, etc.) to see what's going on, if anything.

If you're still not satisfied, get a 2nd opinion.

You can look back in the Adderall posts, but I don't believe kidney pain is part of Adderall side effects.

Little_Princess is right - drink lots of water, at least 64 oz a day, if not more.

Yes, yes, yes....
Only recently has this been an issue with me! Everything you've mentioned, I've experienced this past week or so and I can't figure it out! There were times when I couldn't even move! I went to the walk in clinic (my doc was on vacation) and they took an x-ray, said they didn't see anything, and thought it was a kidney stone that could be moving and didn't show up on the x-ray. The pain has gone away for the past day but now it is faint. I am on antibiotics for the stones and think that they may be helping for now. I was also given a pain med, but that will only last for so long.
As for giving any helpful info... I'm stumped! I just wanted to let you know that i've had the same problem, and am on Adderal as well. At the walk in, they asked for all meds being taken and they didn't seem concerned with the adderal.

I go to a kidney specialist - he says Adderall and kidney issues are not related. I have asked him this at least 2x, told him how long I've been on Adderall, dosage; everytime he has said they are not related.

lotsofconfusion:
Go to another doc. you don't need to be on antibiotics if you're passing a kidney stone, unless you have an infection. Believe me you - you'll know when you have an infection.
I have passed 3 stones and have 8 more - I'm well versed in kidney stones, kidney issues and testing.
I don't believe X-rays show stones very well - a CT scan is needed to see kidney stones. Everytime they've needed to see my stones - it's been a CT scan.

Thanks, I think that I'm going to see my doc when she comes back from vacation, if the pain comes back. It hasn't in a couple of days...*crossing fingers*. Can't really trust a walk in clinic I guess.

in the meantime, lotsofconfusion - drink lots and lots of water. If it's a kidney stone that will help it pass faster (if it hasn't already).

I wouldn't wish kidney stones on my worst enemy!

Best wishes!

Lol, that's what I've been doing! I'm now water logged and my eye-balls are floating! I don't think it was kidney stones...
Thanks for the suggestions though!

Re: Adderall - kidney pain?

I had the exact same issue when I recently began taking adderall again after a 6 year period without it. I obviously thought trough several things that were already mentioned here and I made the jump to kidneys however being that it is not a documented scientific side affect it had to be something else. So I then realized one thing I do differently on adderall! I walk on campus between classes 2 sometimes even 3 times faster. This I discovered was the answer to my concerns. Obviously everyone is different my situation may be an abnormality but when I stopped walking so fast my back felt much better Hope that helps even somewhat!
