Adderall XR and Strattera together?

Hi, my name is Larry and this is my first post here. Iíve been reading this board for awhile but thought Iíd jump in with some questions.

Iím 34 years old and have been diagnosed as AD/HD since I was 5 or so. As a child I was on many meds that never really helped. I was always in trouble too.

Iím now on meds again for the first time as an adult. I started off on Strattera working up to I think 60 or 80mg. Iím now on Adderall XR, 40mg in the morning and 20mg in the afternoon.

When I was on Strattera I couldnít believe the difference and wondered why I didnít seek meds sooner. The problem is that after a few weeks it would stop working and the doc would have to increase the dosage. This happened time after time.

The pros I got from Strattera were:

Increased focus, self-control, drive to get things done, and clear thinking.

The cons were:

I became very tired and the effects wore off after a few weeks

Now here are my pros/cons with Adderall.

Pros: I love how it changes me from an introvert to an extravert; I can really talk intelligently when on Adderall, control of hunger, self-control, less impulsive, energy when first taken.

Cons: Medication is supposed to last 10hrs or more but it only lasts about 5 for me, Iím very tired once it wears off, I get ideas of things Iíd like to do that I donít once meds wear off, it doesnít give me the same drive to get things done like Strattera.

So now to my question, does anyone take both Adderall and Strattera together? Or considering what Iíve said about the affects these drugs have on me is there something else I should try?

I don't know a definite answer to your question, but I do remember reading something about Adderall and a possible interaction with norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (which is what Strattera is) and it amplifying that effect.

Adderall & Strattera

I have heard of people taking both but I don't see how it could help.
Strattera is a non-stimulant that works by blocking the reuptake of norepinephrine. Adderall works by blocking the reuptake of dopamine and norepinephrine, and increacing their release. You would be taking two medications that do the same thing, so there would be even less norepinephrine reuptake but thats it. There is another medication called Desoxyn that has been found to last 50% longer and be more effective with smaller a dosage. If I were you I would talk to my doctor about Desoxyn.

I am currently taking 75mg of Strattera (50mg AM/25mg PM) and 10mg of Adderall XR (5mg AM/ 5mg PM). After a year of adjustments, this seems to be the magic dose for me.

Here is a document on the use of both, Strattera and stimulants.

Hmmm... That post sounds a little bit like a "junk mail" type advertisement to me.

I did very well on adderall, but recently I have been having alot of stress and ended up having some kind of anxiety attack. I told my doctor about it and they took me off adderall and put me on strattera. Im in therapy now to deal with my stress and I dont like strattera because it makes me feel kind of weird and it doesnt work as well as adderall. should i switch doctors

Desoxyn sounds good, but getting your doctor to prescribe it is going to be a *****, because of the generic name (Methamphetamine). Oh BTW why would you take strattera along with adderall? Strattera is useless.

Re: Adderall XR and Strattera together?

Make sure to take the two together as most experience sleepiness with the Strattera. Was this your experience the first time around?

Re: Adderall XR and Strattera together?

I take 60mgs of straterra and 20. Mgs of adderall once daily in the morning. (along with 2.5 mgs of celexa)I found it didn't work as well or I was building a tolerance so I take straterra one day then switch to adderall the next day. I found this was more effective for me.

I was on concerta for a bit, but to be honest not until a couple of months ago was I paying attention if the medication worked or not...stupid me!

Re: Adderall XR and Strattera together?

I noticed when I was easing off of Straterra and moving onto Adderall that I was really on fire at work, socially, pretty much giving a 110% to everything. Was this because I JUST started taking Adderall for the first time? Or, was it because I had Straterra in my system and I was taking Adderall at the same time? I don't know....but it was definitely working wonders when I first started taking Adderall. It still works now, but I definitely noticed much more of a positive difference then. Also, I worry a little bit about the blood pressure side effects of taking Adderall and Strattera...anyone know of any serious side effects associated with the two taken together?

Re: Adderall XR and Strattera together?

Hi Larry, my name is Cheyenne. I joined this group for the specific purpose of responding to your question with my experience.

I started on Strattera for my severe ADHD in September 2009. At first, I thought this was the answer, but over time it became less and less effective until this summer when I might as well have been taking sugar pills.

I don't have a psychiatrist, but I do have a sympathetic GP who I've been working with for med solutions. Last month I switched to Adderall XR, 20mg. I still had 2/3 of a bottle left of 60 mg Strattera, so started taking them in conjunction, timing my doses for maximum effect.

The result has been the Holy Grail of med combos I have been searching for the last half decade. The effects of both together are greater than the sum of their parts. The Adderall motivates me while the Strattera manages the stress/anxiety, offering me the right combination of focus, clarity, and overall life effectiveness I haven't had in years (if ever).

The bad news is convincing my GP to prescribe both, because he's not educated on the details of ADHD and takes a conservative approach based on clinical research as opposed to real-life experiences. His nurse declined to allow me a script for both, telling me "it's like taking two of the same thing" (her words). Dealing with this kind of professional ignorance is frustrating, because I know more about this condition (and how it affects me) than my doctor. I don't care how they're supposed to work, I care about how they actually work.

Mind you, I am perfectly aware of the differences in body chemistry and how everyone's needs are different. What works for one doesn't always work for everyone. I am encouraged that I did not discover this alone and there has been research to support my experience. I printed out the link in a previous comment to give to my doctor while I search for an ADHD specialist that can help me manage this better.

Take care.

Re: Adderall XR and Strattera together?

Theoretically this would work well.....some individuals with coexisting anxiety may find themselves overstimulated due to PNS stimulation 2˚ to increased NE.

Males may have ED or ejaculatory difficulty. But if the positive effects outweigh the side effects I'd say go for it.

Out of curiosity please give us details as to your CURRENT regimen with this including your dosage times, with or without food etc. I'd be very interested in hearing this. @ Thrashbear

Thanks
